This individual is responsible for supervising a team of welders and fitters, ensuring that all structural welding work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory guidelines. The Structural Weld Supervisor acts as the primary liaison between management, engineering teams, and the welding crew, coordinating schedules, assigning tasks, and resolving technical challenges that arise during fabrication or installation projects.
  • Team Leadership and Supervision

  • Provide clear direction, motivation, and mentorship fostering an inclusive and productive work environment.
  • Conduct regular toolbox talks, safety briefings, and performance evaluations.
Quality Assurance and Compliance

Ensure all welding operations are performed in compliance with project drawings, welding procedures, specifications, codes (such as AWS D1.1, ASME, or equivalent), and client requirements.

Perform visual inspections and coordinate with quality control personnel to verify the integrity and quality of welds.

Maintain and review documentation related to welding procedures, qualifications, and welder certifications.

Safety Management

Promote a safety-first culture by ensuring all welding activities align with OSHA regulations, site-specific safety guidelines, and company policies.

Monitor the use and condition of personal protective equipment (PPE), welding equipment, and work areas to prevent accidents and injuries.

Investigate incidents, near-misses, or unsafe conditions, and participate in root-cause analysis and safety committee meetings.

Project Coordination and Scheduling

Plan and organize daily and weekly work schedules according to project timelines, resource availability, and material deliveries.

Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other trades to ensure seamless workflow and accurate completion of welding tasks.

Monitor project progress, track labor hours, and report status updates to management.

Technical Support and Problem Solving

Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols to provide guidance to team members.

Tackle welding-related issues, such as deformation, misalignment, or defects, by applying sound engineering principles and practical solutions.

Stay ahead of new welding technologies, equipment, and standard processes to enhance productivity and quality.

Primary Duties
  • Supervise and coordinate the daily efforts of welders and fitters, providing clear instructions and ensuring compliance with all quality and safety policies.
  • Oversee the setup, operation, and maintenance of welding equipment and related machinery.
  • Review project plans, blueprints, and welding procedures to ensure proper sequencing and execution of work.
  • Train and develop crew members, conducting hands-on instruction in advanced welding techniques as required.
  • Monitor and document all welding activities, maintaining accurate records for audits and inspections.
  • Work closely with quality control inspectors to address and resolve any issues related to weld quality or compliance.
  • Support the onboarding and certification of new welders, ensuring all crew members meet required standards of competence and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers and clients to report progress, address concerns, and implement changes as directed.
YOU HAVE:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; technical diploma or certificate in welding technology, fabrication, or related field preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of hands-on welding experience in a structural or industrial setting, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Certifications: Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) designation or equivalent is highly desirable. Additional certifications (e.g., AWS, ASME, CWB) in welding procedures and safety are an asset.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in a range of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW), blueprint reading, and familiarity with welding codes and standards.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and motivate teams, with effective communication and conflict-resolution skills.
