What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you driven to make a difference in national security? Sandia National Laboratories is seeking an accomplished leader to serve as Deputy Laboratories Director (DLD) for Integrated Security Missions, reporting directly to the Labs Director.

In this critical executive role, you will provide overarching strategic direction and integration for Sandia's National Security, Global Security, Deterrence, Science, and Energy programs. You will guide and align cross-division activities encompassing:



  • Long-term strategy and portfolio stewardship

  • Common resource management

  • Management assurance and risk management

  • Infrastructure oversight

  • Senior-level customer engagement and coordination



You will lead a team of Associate Labs Directors, setting strategic and operational direction for mission execution, planning, and innovation. Together, you will ensure that Sandia's strategic plan and priorities are deployed effectively across the enterprise.

Key responsibilities include:



  • Managing an annual budget of approximately $2 billion with a focus on impact, accountability, and sustainability

  • Serving as a senior executive liaison to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Department of Energy, in accordance with Sandia's Senior Leadership Communications Plan

  • Partnering with other mission and shared service leaders to develop coordinated strategies, policies, and enterprise-wide programs

  • Building and strengthening customer and partner relationships across the DHS, DOD, DOE, and Intelligence Community to influence national strategies, develop and deliver integrated system solutions to meet U.S. needs, and sustain multi-site operations

  • Representing Sandia in collaboration with other DOE, DOD, DHS, and interagency sites to advance shared mission objectives



As a member of Sandia's executive leadership team, you will play a pivotal role in setting the Laboratories' strategic direction, shaping policy objectives, and driving initiatives that fulfill our national security mission.

Role Expectations

Accountable for the overall performance of the Integrated Security Missions portfolio in meeting contractual commitments.



  • Lead efficient, coordinated cross-division management of portfolios, resources, infrastructure, risk, and senior-level customer communications

  • Drive consistency and appropriate standardization across engineering, technology development, and production operations

  • Ensure operational activities are executed safely, effectively, and efficiently

  • Partner closely with the DLDs for Nuclear Deterrence and Labs' Operations to ensure alignment and integration

  • Manage portfolio performance to meet the Laboratories headcount and indirect expenses targets

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with internal and external customers to advance key technologies

  • Foster effective working relationships with functional organizations across the Labs

  • Shape and integrate functional strategies to support mission success

  • Establish systems and processes that enable transformation, with an emphasis on operational excellence and balanced risks

  • Cultivate relationships across the Laboratories and with external parties to achieve consensus on complex strategic issues, using cultural and individual differences to maximize success; champion team decisions

  • Set ambitious functional or cross-functional goals that align with and advance Laboratories' priorities

  • Provide executive leadership for Labs activities in the absence of the Laboratories Director, as required

  • Sustain and grow core competencies in national and global security, including hypersonics; specialized sensors and radars; information technologies; vulnerability assessments; trusted strategic radiation-hardened microelectronics; monitoring and sensing technologies; advanced security technologies; emergency response capabilities; and international relations for global threat reduction



Qualifications We Require:



  • Masters of Science degree in engineering or science related field and/or demonstrated executive leadership in national security organization

  • 20 years in a science and/or engineering development leadership role

  • 10 years collaborating with US national security entities, customers, and suppliers

  • U.S. citizen able to obtain DOE Q and SCI security clearances



Qualifications We Desire:

  • Extensive managerial experience in technical and scientific fields related to nuclear weapons engineering and product realization

  • Leadership experience in nuclear weapons engineering and production, including systems engineering and integration within the Nuclear Security Enterprise

  • Knowledge of advanced computational and experimental engineering sciences, including modeling and simulation for weapons concepts

  • Well-established relationships within the Nuclear Security Enterprise

  • Proven track record in driving continuous improvement in safety, security, product quality, delivery, and cost

  • Senior executive-level experience in strategy development and deployment

  • Strong business insight with ability to connect effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences (customers, suppliers, engineering, integrated supply chain, program management)

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across engineering domains with responsibility for integrating complex systems

  • Ability to create and communicate a shared vision, inspire change across the organization, and motivate people and teams toward ambitious goals

  • Integrative problem solver who can address complex, multi-faceted challenges while considering both business and strategic implications

  • Commitment to continuous improvement in product quality, new product introduction, and delivery and cost performance



About Our Team:

The Executive Leadership Team is responsible for integrated, strategic leadership, assured mission performance, shared excellence and learning, and communication. Senior Leadership Team staff members assess performance and formulate plans to improve management of the Laboratories.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
