About the role

We're seeking a strategic legal partner to support employment law matters and litigation management. This role will advise key partners, especially within our HR Department, on employment-related legal issues, while proactively identifying risks and staying ahead of regulatory developments that affect Symetra as an employer.

What you will do



  • Provide day-to-day legal counsel in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on employment law and litigation.
  • Advise on a wide range of employment matters including wage and hour laws employee policies, leave and accommodation issues, investigations, performance management, employee benefit plans, employee incentive plans, employment training, and terminations.
  • Work closely with Human Resources Business Partners and other internal clients.
  • Manage employment non-litigation and litigation activities including drafting pleadings, handling discovery, and participating in mediations/arbitrations.
  • Manage outside counsel regarding other litigation matters, as assigned by lead litigation counsel.
  • Monitor and interpret judicial, legislative, and regulatory developments impacting employment law.
  • Build trusted relationships with internal partners, offering clear, timely, and strategic legal guidance.
  • Contribute to cross-functional decision-making by providing legal advice in connection with the development of company policies and best practices.
  • Prioritize workload by evaluating urgency of issues to increase efficiency and effectiveness of Law department.
  • Provide day-to-day litigation handling as directed by lead litigation counsel.

Compensation

Salary Range: $183,100 - $305,100 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are



  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school required, and an active bar license.
  • 8+ years of experience in private practice and/or in-house legal roles.
  • Strong employment law experience including interpreting employment laws and providing legal advice, including in the areas of wage and hour, workplace safety, meal and rest breaks, disability and leave, discrimination, employee investigations, and wrongful discharge.
  • Life Insurance company or other financial services company experience either as outside counsel or in-house counsel preferred.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions a plus.
  • Deep expertise in employment litigation, including:

    • Advising on compliance and risk mitigation
    • Drafting legal documents and managing discovery
    • Experience with arguing motions, taking depositions and participating in mediations.

  • Some travel required
