About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity to join Boston Scientific as Director of Research and Development, Mechanical Engineering and Surgical Access for the Neuromodulation business unit. In our Neuromodulation business, we give life back to every patient and their family by providing leading solutions that silence pain, ease movement disorders and transform care of neurological conditions. We do this through innovative implantable therapies that modulate the activity of neural structures, including brain and spinal cord. This role is integral as we build a differentiated portfolio to allow us to meet patient needs and increase access to these life transforming therapies.

As Director of R&D, you will oversee a group of technical experts (engineers, scientists, and/or technicians) dedicated to exploratory, sustaining and new product development efforts to commercialize state of the art neurostimulation solutions. This role involves leading a global high-performing team to drive innovation and technical decision making, while recruiting and retaining top talent. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building trust and inspiring direct reports, cross-functional peers, senior leaders and customers, and experience leading strategy, people, technical and change management.

This role follows the in-office model, requiring employees to be in our local office in Valencia, CA or Arden Hills, MN at least four days per week.Relocation assistance would be offered for this position. Your responsibilities will include:
* Ownership of the Mechanical and Surgical Access product research and development strategy, including defining a strategic vision for next generation systems based on patient and clinician needs, technology advancements and business opportunities.
* Drives functional excellence globally for the team that researches and develops new and sustaining products, projects, and technologies. Sets best practices and functional/technical direction for the job function across the organization.
* Oversees the development and integration of complex Class III implantable and non-implantable medical devices, learning from post-market experiences to inform future products.
* In cooperation with Marketing, leads efforts to identify and discover new product opportunities, strategies and target markets that are consistent with the company's objectives and strategic plan related to mechanical design and surgical access for Neuromodulation products. Develops good understanding of user expectations and important product features.
* Plans, budgets, and executes all milestones of medical device development according to SOPs, international standards, regulations and business expectations.
* Identifies technologies and develops intellectual property critical to future business growth.
* Active participant in the due diligence process of acquisitions.
* Excellent people leader that inspires others, promotes change, develops and cares for team members, and drives high engagement and motivation towards ambitious goals.
* Builds and manages effective global teams that work cross functionally.
* Leads change and champions improvement efforts.
* Communicates effectively at all levels of the organization, including internal corporate messaging, ongoing development and project status, and scientific progress to stakeholders inside and outside the company.
* Establishes extensive internal contacts across BSC and external contacts with physicians, key opinion leaders, and/or industry specialists. In particular, forms good relationships with all departments participating in the development portfolio.
* Uses business and industry expertise to anticipate and react to industry developments, identifying opportunities and programs for BSC growth.
* Collaboratively contributes to defining short and long term Neuromodulation divisional strategy.

Required qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or an associated discipline
* Minimum of ten years of R&D and project management experience in medical device environment with management responsibility
* Expertise in all phases of research and development of medical devices and/or surgical tools/procedures (from inception to manufacture transfer and integration of real world experience)
* Organizational depth and diversity of experience with a working knowledge of new product realization and strategic thinking. Successful track record of taking a product from concept to commercialization
* Significant functional, technical, and industry knowledge to anticipate developments and identify opportunities for innovation
* Ability to travel 20% of time

Preferred qualifications:
* Strong experience with Class III implantable devices
* Strong experience in related fields, including spine, pain management, robotic surgery, or neurosurgery
* Skilled leading global teams in product development and problem solving in the medical device space
* Proficient in forming, leading, and driving discussions with multiple stakeholders/audiences
* A self-initiator with a strong business acumen
* Excellent communication and presentation skills

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) - see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
