The Chemist position is responsible for leading activities related to new product development and the improvement of existing product lines within the Industrial Wood Group of the Performance Coatings Group. The incumbent will have opportunities to demonstrate leadership while providing support to internal customers such as management, manufacturing, marketing, quality, commercialization and will also support external customers.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships.


  • Manage projects by leading product development and reformulation initiatives through to Commercialization, utilizing experience and knowledge while following established Stage Gate Processes
  • Generate timelines and achieve milestones set forth
  • Formulate through DOE - including making paint and working with various applications to optimize technology performance
  • Clear, concise communication on project updates with Sales, Tech Service, upper management and sometimes Customers, displaying data-driven decision-making skills
  • Provide Quality and Operations support for scale-up of new products including wet sample testing and occasional spraying
  • Collaborate with Quality teams to identify Root Cause on Customer field complaints both product and process related
  • Demonstrate significant knowledge in use of chemicals, raw materials, substrates, and instruments
  • Test products to industry specifications and write professional reports to the field
  • Complete individual work on simple projects with no direction and complex projects with guidance
  • Adhere to company safety guidelines at all times and mentor less experienced chemists in the laboratory

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
* Must be at least 18 years of age.
* Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
* 3 years of paint and coatings industry experience
* Computer use and data analysis
* Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* 5-7 years of Wood coatings experience
* Formulation knowledge of UV/LED/EB Cured coatings
* Experience following Stage Gate Processes and Six Sigma/DMAIC problem solving practices
* Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)
* Design of Experiment
* Utilization of Stage Gate Processes

Travel Requirements: 20% Domestic and International
