Summary: The Writer and Editor will serve as a key communications resource, producing clear, compelling, and accurate written content across a variety of formats. This role requires a seasoned communicator with experience in science, medical, and Department of Defense (DoD) environments. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively to develop content that informs, engages, and aligns with operational security and style standards.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Work independently to create content, working closely with experts throughout the command. This level of autonomy requires an experienced writer who has familiarity of the science and/or medical industry, as well as DoD.
- Interview subject matter experts on complex issues and write plain-language newsletter articles that are ready for publishing.
- Gather information from a variety of sources and draft press releases, video scripts, informational products, and social media posts among others.
- Edit a variety of written material, including internal and external command publications, to ensure they are completely free of errors.
- Assist Writer/Speechwriter personnel as needed to rapidly research topics and write talking points or speeches for executive leadership.
- Write and edit in Associated Press (AP) style.
- Write and edit for web style with an understanding of operational security requirements.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with mastery of AP style
- Ability to distill complex scientific or medical information into accessible language
- Strong interviewing and research capabilities
- Familiarity with DoD communication standards and protocols
- Understanding of web writing principles and operational security considerations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and content management systems
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or related field
- 5+ years of professional writing/editing experience, preferably in science, medical, or government sectors
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality content independently
- Experience writing for both print and digital platforms
- Familiarity with AP style and web writing standards
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting DoD, DHA, or federal government communications
- Background in science or medical writing
- Knowledge of speechwriting and executive communications
- Experience with social media content development
- Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards
Pay and Benefits The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $95,000 annually. At Goldbelt, we value and reward our team's dedication and hard work.
