Area of Focus

Library & Cultural Arts (two positions)

  • Digital Initiatives intern

The Digital Initiatives intern will work primarily with the Principal Librarian for Digital Initiatives & Special Projects to manage existing automation processes and develop new ones. The work location will be the Georgina Cole Library with the possibility of working at other city locations and may include the opportunity for telework. Tasks will include data entry work in the early stages of the position to create capacity for the Principal Librarian. The intern will collaborate on projects with Library & Cultural Arts staff to enhance and automate data collection processes and generate evaluation processes to inform decision making. Work may include performing observational studies to collect information to evaluate library services and enhance decision making.

  • Genealogy & Carlsbad History intern

The Genealogy & Carlsbad History intern will work primarily with the Carlsbad History Librarians to assist in organizing and analyzing a collection of City of Carlsbad documents from the COVID-19 era. The work location will be the Georgina Cole Library. Tasks will include working with librarians on analysis, project planning and digital intake of the materials. After gaining an understanding of a collection's arrangement and points of access, the intern will create metadata and a finding aid for easy retrieval of items in the collection. Work tasks may include assisting in other aspects of the division's work, such as providing support in inventory.

Hours & Duration Hours and duration of student internships are flexible depending on class schedules and intern assignments. This is a part time position.

Key Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities - Digital Initiatives

  • Learn about area of career interest by observing and assisting professionals in the assigned department

  • Assist in collecting, organizing, and analyzing Library & Cultural Arts data using spreadsheet and data visualization software tools

  • Assist with requirements gathering and discussions on building program evaluation processes using surveys, logic models and evaluation methods

  • Assist with data evaluation process automationusing software tools to collect, organize and manage feedback using software tools

Key Responsibilities - Genealogy & Carlsbad History

  • Assist in organizing and analyzing a collection of City of Carlsbad documents from the COVID-19 era. Work will involve metadata creation and indexing. Other aspects may include but are not limited to digitization and work within our Digital Asset Management System, Canto

  • Additional work may involve:

  • Assisting in performing inventory for the Carlsbad History archival collection

  • Assisting archives staff with assessing new donations and helping researchers


Qualifications

Qualifications - Digital Initiatives

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to think creatively and apply problem-solving skills to real-world challenges

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively in a team environment

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city staff

  • Familiarity with using software to manage data sets.

Qualifications - Genealogy & Carlsbad History

  • Demonstrated interest in archives, museums, history, and assisting researchers

  • Experience in processing and digitizing archival collections and creating finding aids

  • Willingness and ability to be flexible, creative and innovative in approaches to work and in interacting with others

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Ability to organize and prioritize duties

  • Ability to think critically and propose resolutions to problems


Experience & Education

We welcome applicants who are either currently in school (high school, college, university, technical or trade) or have graduated within the past year from an accredited program.

Physical Requirements:

  • Need to be able to perform frequent downward or upward flexion or turning of the neck, fine finger dexterity and grasp to manipulate the keyboard, telephone, writing instruments, papers, books, manuals, and reports

  • Job entails standing, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching at and above shoulders and twisting at the waist. On an infrequent basis, the incumbent must be able to squat or kneel
