THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, specifically PennDOT District 12-0, is actively seeking candidates for the position of Environmental Planner 1. This pivotal role involves supporting the District Regulatory Permits Coordinator in the coordination, preparation, and review of various design plans related to bridge construction, erosion and sedimentation (E&S) control plans, and stormwater management strategies. The successful candidate will ensure that all projects comply with relevant federal and departmental policies, facilitating the acquisition of necessary permits while adhering to the current laws and regulations set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the four County Conservation Districts. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will play a crucial part in evaluating and analyzing the environmental impacts of proposed, planned, and existing transportation facilities. Your responsibilities will include providing management with well-informed recommendations to ensure adherence to all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations. This will encompass various areas, particularly focusing on wetland and stormwater mitigation. You will assist in coordinating efforts with consultants, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to address wetland encroachments associated with PennDOT projects. Additionally, you will review mitigation plans concerning stream and wetland impacts and collaborate with Conservation Districts to identify appropriate areas for wetland and stormwater mitigation, ensuring that all environmental considerations are thoroughly addressed.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Uniontown. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of professional experience in local, regional, or state environmental planning; or
  • A Bachelor's degree in planning or environmental planning; and one year of professional experience in local, regional, or state environmental planning; or
  • A Master's degree in environmental planning; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
