HJF is seeking a Scientist III - Military Suicide Prevention to lead the development and execution of research projects. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Helps support the development of new protocols.

This position will be in support of The Suicide Care, Prevention, and Research Initiative (Suicide CPR Initiative) within the Medical and Clinical Psychology (MPS) department of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. The Suicide CPR Initiative was established in 2006, and is strategically in a unique position to focus on the problem of military suicide, given its origins at USU and its established partnerships with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, as well as national and international collaborators and stakeholders. Overall, the mission of the Suicide CPR Initiative is threefold: CARE: To develop effective interventions targeted at reducing suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors; PREVENTION: To save lives through education, intervention, science, and advocacy; RESEARCH: To advance suicide intervention science and practice.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.



  • Demonstrates cross-disciplinary knowledge, leadership, and communication. Designs and implements experimental protocol.
  • Trains and supervises technical staff and other scientists. Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.
  • Collects, processes, and interprets experimental data. Assess strengths and weaknesses of work.
  • Prepares publication-ready manuscripts. Finalizes reports and reviews for submission to scientific journals.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Supervisory Responsibilities



  • Direct Supervisor: Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.


Education and Experience



  • Doctoral Degree required in Psychology or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust clearance.


Physical Capabilities



  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary for this position is $100,500 - $140,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
