About This Role

Responsible for assisting with a variety of engineering tasks focused on materials, failure analysis, mechanical design and engineering analysis. Your role will involve supporting both mechanical and metallurgical analysis-including laboratory testing, materials evaluation, and investigations into material failures. You will assist in computer modeling, test design and experiments, instrumentation, and fabrication and testing. Work environments will range from the office to the lab, and occasionally work will be performed in the field. You will be responsible for planning and executing tests, as well as completing project goals/objectives that are accomplished within the prescribed timeframe with the assistance of Staff Consultants, Senior Consultants, and/or Senior Managing Consultants.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works with other team members to perform failure analysis, and cause finding.
  • Designs tests or fixtures to complete tests, takes test data and analyzes and prepares charts, graphs, sketches, diagrams, flow charts, and compiles and records engineering data to clarify design details or functional criteria.
  • Understands and works with servo hydraulic test frames and systems.
  • Participates in field investigations and testing
  • Participates in fabricating, installing, and modifying equipment test equipment and prototypes.
  • Confers with project personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems.
  • Assists in preparing and conducting well- developed and well-prepared client presentations and technical conference presentations.
  • Mechanical modeling using Solidworks

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree required in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science/Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics.
  • Master's degree preferred in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science/Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics.

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in the mass transit / railroad industry is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience with bandsaw usage, and other sectioning equipment
  • Experience with metallurgical sample preparation
  • Experience with Optical or Digital Microscopes
  • Experience with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive spectroscopy
  • Experience with various hardness testers, Rockwell, Brinell, Microhardness
  • Experience setting up and performing tests and testing with complex instrumentation (strain gauges, load cells, etc.)
  • Prior experience with railroad engineering analysis or testing preferred.
  • Operating hydraulic test equipment such as MTS or Instron load frames.
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering design concepts and stress analysis
  • Background or familiarity with rail preferred but not required.

Computer Skills:

  • Intermediate/advanced skills in Excel, Word, and Internet software skills.
  • Experience with data acquisition and testing software such as Dewesoft X or LabVIEW preferred.
  • Matlab or Python preferred
  • Solidworks or other 3D-Modeling package preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Successful Completion of FE exam (or the ability to complete FE exam), preferred.
