Brookside is currently hiring for a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join our WIC-Nutrition department. This work is based at our WIC offices with flexibility for remote work. Come join our team in this rewarding role!
- Collaborates with the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator to ensure that participants receive high quality breastfeeding services.
- Counsels pregnant and breastfeeding women to support better breastfeeding outcomes. Counseling may be conducted in an individual or group format and it may be virtual or in-person.
- Teaches breastfeeding classes for pregnant and postpartum mothers and leads breastfeeding support groups.
- Is available outside the normal 8:30-6pm working schedule to new moms who are having breastfeeding problems.
- Documents individual or group breastfeeding counseling sessions in WIC computer system.
- Refers mothers to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert (DBE), Local Program Breastfeeding Coordinator, WIC nutritionist, IBCLC, the mother's physician, or community partners as appropriate.
- Collaborates with Breastfeeding Coordinator to plan and implement World Breastfeeding Week activities
- Trains or demonstrates breastfeeding counselor work to new breastfeeding counselors, interns and other WIC staff.
- Attends trainings and state agency meetings as required. Meets continuing education requirements (CEU's).
- Participates in monthly staff meetings. Consistently performs as an integral member of the team and performs in a manner that fosters a positive and productive work environment.
- Initiates and performs duties with minimal supervision and takes on additional responsibilities when necessary to ensure smooth operations.
- Follows prescribed safety rules and regulations. Observes hospital policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
- Has experience Breastfeeding in the past 5 years
- Current or previous WIC participant
- Ability to provide counseling in Spanish. Portuguese language skills a plus.
- Enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers have a positive experience
- Willing to make calls/send texts outside of normal WIC office hours
- Sensitive to the needs of the WIC population
- Demonstrated collaborative team player
