Position Description: |
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Iowa invites applications for an Instructional Track Faculty (open rank) position beginning August 2026.This is an instructional-track faculty position; the track does not include the possibility of tenure but otherwise parallels the tenure track with various ranks (Assistant Professor of Instruction, Associate Professor of Instruction, Professor of Instruction). Rank is dependent on years of experience and evidence of meeting requirements for a given rank (https://resource.clas.uiowa.edu/faculty-affairs/appointments-review/clas-ui-procedures-instructional-track-promotion#accordion-item-3551-1). The position is renewable in one-year increments for the first three years, and renewable thereafter in three- or five-year increments (depending on rank). As faculty members, instructional-track faculty participate in departmental governance with voting rights. Applications are sought from candidates who have: 1) a commitment to engaged student learning in undergraduate chemistry education, including the use of evidence-based instructional practices; 2) experience teaching introductory chemistry lecture and/or laboratory courses 3) a willingness to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to reform and sustain aspects of the undergraduate chemistry curriculum and 4) excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in chemistry, chemistry education, or a closely related field by the start date to be qualified for the position. The candidate will largely contribute to instruction in introductory chemistry courses, which may include General Chemistry I and II, Principles of Chemistry I and II, or Organic Chemistry. Instructional track faculty may also contribute to other courses as needed or desired. Often, instructional track faculty will work in a team setting with several instructors contributing to a single course. In addition to teaching and overseeing the laboratory portion of the course, when applicable, instructional track faculty also supervise teaching assistants assigned to the laboratory or the discussion sections of these classes (depending on the assignment), develop new curricula and experiential learning opportunities, and engage in other professional activities and service. The department has a strong history of collaboration with campus partners such as the Center for Teaching, the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology, the Office of Student Learning,and the Pathways to Excellence Office to support the incorporation of research-supported instructional practices such as learning assistants and the development of tools such as the Elements of Success dashboard. Education Requirement: |
