Position Purpose |
Under minimal supervision or working independently, the Painter II completes quality painting projects requiring attention to appearance, function and durability. Works as a lead member of a crew assigned to small scale and/or routine projects, works independently, or with peers. Prepares surfaces for new coating materials, mixing coating materials according to specifications, applies coating materials to a variety of surfaces where appearance as well as surface protection are important, and is responsible for the care and maintenance of the tools and equipment employed in the painter's trade. The Painter II is an intermediate level position with skill and proficiency in the execution of painting duties. |

- Minimum three- to five years of commercial/institutional painting experience.
- Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
- Able to interact successfully with the College community in a service-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in standard surface preparation and coating application methods and techniques, including the skill necessary to meet specifications.
- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of standard surface preparation and painting tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of chemicals to assist with removal of paints, urethanes, varnish, rust, and other difficult conditions that need in-depth preparation for finished product.
- Knowledge of building up, shaping, and levelling surfaces with appropriate compounds.
- Knowledge of and requisite skill to obtain finely smoothed surfaces.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
- Computer skills including basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, smartphones or tablets.
- Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
- Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
- Knowledge of safety regulations applicable to the use of ladders, ropes, harnesses, and scaffolds.
- Willingness to work overtime when required.
Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
- Driver Safety
OSHA 10 Hour class- Hazard Communication
- Respirator (including fit and physical?)
- Asbestos Awareness
EPA RRP Lead Training

Responsibilities
- Inspects smaller and routine sites to determine procedure, material, tools and methodology needed. Inspects/audits completed work to confirm that work order requirements and expectations are met.
- Requests work orders, advises supervisor of materials/services required for repairs.
- May supervise crew in small scale or routine projects.
- Communicates directly and respectfully with building occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work.
- Prepares the surfaces for new finish, removing old finishes when necessary.
- Prepares new work plugging holes, cleaning, final sanding.
- Repairs surfaces using putty, plaster, joint compound, or other appropriate material.
- Selects pre-mixed paints/stains including enamels, glosses specialty paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers, & shellacs. Thins, stirs and mixes coating materials according to specific directions and needs. Matches, tints, tones and blends coating materials.Prepares products per manufacturer's instructions.
- Uses mechanical mixer for volume blending.
- Applies products using appropriate brushes, rollers, spray, or other appropriate method.
- Applies products using spray equipment to apply paints in the spray booth.
- Applies special finish appearances such as simulating wood grain, marble, brick, tile, etc.
- Meets specifications regarding match, texture, decoration, thickness, and level, on wall surfaces, architectural woodwork, and furniture.
- Assures the coating finish meets surface protection requirements.
- Cleans brushes, rollers, spray equipment, and other equipment; safely disposes of used paints and rags.
- Protects surrounding areas.
- Uses ladders, scaffold, &/or platform as appropriate in a safe manner.
