About the Position

As an Engineer Associate, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in operations and maintenance (O&M) engineering. You will play a key role in supporting the safe and effective operation of Flood Control structures. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of engineering tasks, including conducting plan reviews, performing inspection activities, ensuring quality control and compliance with plans, specifications, and regulations, and assuring compliance with environmental regulations for operation and maintenance concerns on flood control projects for the O&M Division.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in a work-related engineering discipline that includes, but is not limited to, Civil, Structural, Chemical, Environmental, Mechanical engineering, Landscape Architecture, Surveying, Construction Management, or other closely related fields; Or

  • Four years of professional pre-registration civil engineering experience or experience performing senior-level technical engineering work, including civil site plan reading and interpretation

  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) may substitute for the aforementioned experience

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Ability to read, understand, review, and make recommendations on general site plans

Job Contributions

  • Perform reviews and approve designs, models, plans, and/or permits to ensure they meet District regulatory standards and O&M needs

  • Perform administrative and technical reviews of applications, engineering plans, reports, and other supporting documents in the form of, but not limited to, IGAs, MOUs, and maintenance plans

  • Participate in the design of in-house, maintenance, construction, and safety contract projects to ensure compliance and conformance with plans, specifications, standard drawings, and special provisions

  • Compile, interpret, analyze, and make mathematical calculations for determining material quantities, coverage rates, and grade slopes

  • Participate in final walk-throughs and one-year warranty walks for public works and permitted projects. Review the list of deficiencies and/or incomplete items that need to be repaired and/or replaced for compliance with District standards.

  • Assist in the management and implementation of field operations during flood emergency events, and sandbag tracking and deployment

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, or requires walking or standing to a significant degree

  • Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly

  • Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noises, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. The position is subject to atmospheric conditions: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

  • The physical demands associated with the position primarily fall within the Light and Sedentary categories, accounting for approximately 90% of the role's responsibilities. In this capacity, they will engage in activities such as ROW plan review, inspecting flood control ROW permits and structures, documenting findings, and coordinating with project teams, which predominantly require minimal physical exertion. However, it is important to acknowledge that the position may necessitate Heavy physical demands during emergency situations, such as sandbag operations in response to flooding. These instances, while infrequent, require the ability to lift and carry heavier materials to ensure effective flood control and community safety. The nature of these emergency tasks underscores the need to be physically capable of handling such demands when they arise

  • 4X4 truck/SUV, MS Office, Bluebeam, Arc-GIS, calculator, and basic field equipment

Protective equipment required

  • Hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses/ eye protection, safety-toed footwear, and any other associated PPE
