Information Technology Specialist (Data Management/Avaya Switch Tech)

To provide installation support for a variety of Information Technology (IT) activities including data management, systems analysis, Avaya switch maintenance and applications software development/implementation. Additionally, to perform various IT/data/switch related tasks associated with the overall support of the Sheppard AFB (Base Telecommunications System).

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Information Technology Specialist (Data Management/Avaya Switch Tech): $80,000 - $90,000

Pay commensurate with experience.

Information Technology Specialist (Data Management/Avaya Switch Tech) Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform operation and maintenance on the various switching system(s) and Network equipment
  • Programming controllers, switches, and various devices for telecommunications systems
  • Determining solutions to any problems and issues that are preventing the fiber optic systems from performing optimally.
  • Work order fulfillment and maintenance for IT data/switch/analysis requests as tasked by the COMM Squadron.
  • Perform site surveys to develop technical solutions based on customer requirements for voice, data, and video connectivity installation, implementation, testing, and integration.
  • Advise technical staff of upcoming trends for voice, data, and video solutions with an emphasis on network convergence.
  • Basic operation and support of modern LAN/WAN technology (router, switches, hubs)
  • Operate and maintain telecom closets to include installation of equipment and ladder racks, cable management hardware and verification of premise wiring.
  • Provide general trouble shooting of telephony systems, peripheral equipment, and cable/wiring.
  • Support VoIP infrastructure and its associated software, including IP-PBXs, call management systems, voice mail, and interactive voice response.
  • Where necessary, assist in plan for management or phasing out of legacy telephony systems and other switch-based technologies.
  • Select, deploy, and utilize appropriate tools for reporting and routing of IP telephony traffic on the network.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree with 4-8 years' experience. Candidates with less education/experience will still be considered.
  • Working technical knowledge of VoIP/IP telephony systems, software, and hardware, including voicemail systems, boarder control session devices, switches, routers, call handler devices and handsets.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of the configuration and optimization of VoIP equipment, including voicemail systems, boarder control session devices, switches, routers, call handler devices and handsets.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of SIP, H.323, TCP/IP, and other protocols.
  • Strong understanding VoIP QoS issues and mitigation strategies.
  • Working technical knowledge of the VoIP operating systems (Cisco and Avaya).
  • Direct experience with Avaya and Cisco switches and routers.
  • Familiar with network topologies such as Frame Relay, ATM, ISDN, etc.
  • Knowledge of cabling and wiring systems, design, and installation.
  • Ability to operate tools, components, peripherals, and testing accessories.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
