What to Expect

Tesla'sworld-class Cell Manufacturing Engineering team is looking for a highly-motivated Manufacturing Engineer with experience in wet powder deposition applications for an exciting new project. This engineer is expected to be or become a manufacturing expert in the field of wet powder deposition applications and will be involved in the design, development, commissioning and ramping of high-speed automated equipment, while working in a cross-functional team to test, validate, and roll-out process and product design changes.

The battery cell is a criticalcomponent in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. The ideal candidate should be ready to push their limits, as they join in highly motivated and capable team to make unbelieveable things into reality.


What You'll Do
  • Drive design, development, and commissioning, manufacturingequipmentincluding but not limited to rotogravure, coating, calendaring, extrusion or similar wet powder deposition processes used in cell electrode manufacturing and qualify them using statistically valid data sets and workflow
  • Become owner / subject matter expert to drive equipment-related process improvement including detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Drivemanufacturing ramp by characterizing baseline and improving performance of equipment with wet powder deposition systems; ensure manufacturing lines meet OEE goals
  • Develop manufacturing metrics and key performance indices and implement metrology to measure all critical quality and safety related process items
  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and develop specifications for custom automation equipment
  • Closely collaborate with and manage external equipment integrators, machine suppliers on custom automation equipment development from development through FAT, SAT, buyoff
  • Generate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, mechanical drawings, BOMs, and process flow charts, P&ID
  • Generate machine qualification checklists and manage the install, commissioning, and start-up of new equipment while balancing speed and safety
  • Create manufacturing introduction and deliver training to Operations and Maintenance Technicians to ensure and seamless handover of new equipment

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, ManufacturingEngineering, 3 to 5yearsof relevant experience in mechanical design, manufacturing environment, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in high volume manufacturing involving one or more of these areas is highly desired: roll to roll polymer extrusion, web handling, printing, calendering/ slitting, and battery manufacturing (li-ion, electrode, cathode, anode or other similar chemistries)
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes from prototype to mass production
  • Experience developing automated manufacturing equipment, including fixturing and tooling in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience drawing machine or production line layouts in 2D CAD (AutoCAD preferred)
  • Extensive project management experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development
  • Design experience inproduction equipment, creating/validating layouts, tooling drawings, pneumatic and electrical schematics.Experience with PLC programming a plus
  • Hands on experience assembling and installing equipment a plus. Experience installing, wiring, and plumbing common manufacturing devices. Machining experience including mills, lathes, saws, grinders, etc.
