Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states. Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's autonomous driving technology, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction. You will:
Define Vehicle Body Control Systems: Work closely with Waymo's Product team and external OEM partners to write requirements for vehicle platform Body Control systems and interfaces. Collaborate with other Systems Engineers (e.g., Low Voltage, Networks, Infotainment, Thermal, Security, Motion Controls) to define Body Control systems, including communication networks, architecture design, and functional safety requirements.
Develop Detailed Requirements: Create detailed requirements for Waymo's embedded software and hardware to implement Body Control functions. These functions encompass all vehicle platform and Self-Driving System (SDS) interfaces, such as doors, locks, windows, HVAC, and interior/exterior lighting.
Lead Body Control System Development: Drive the development of Body Controls, Power Mode Management, and Digital Key features. This includes setting requirements with OEMs and internal teams, developing Body Control system architecture with OEMs, and managing verification and validation against program milestones.
Support Verification & Validation (V&V): Help create V&V plans, analyze test results for low voltage systems and body controls, and assess platform communications across various prototype phases. You'll plan and execute tests, analyze data, investigate field issues, and resolve defects, leveraging operations teams when possible.
Collaborate on Software Implementation: Partner with embedded software teams during implementation to ensure requirements are met. Write design documents for new architectures/implementations, review with software teams, and incorporate updates.
Manage Feature Delivery: Oversee the timely delivery of feature sets and updates to the prototype fleet software, troubleshooting issues to achieve the required vehicle capabilities.
You have:
5+ years of experience with electrical power systems and designing for fault tolerance in safety-critical systems.
Proven ability to create and negotiate targets and requirements with OEMs and Waymo adjacencies.
Experience creating and executing effective Design Verification Plans (DVPs).
An understanding of low voltage and body control systems in safety-critical applications, including fail-safe vs. fail-tolerant design principles and timing requirements.
We prefer:
A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Physics, or a similar field.
At least 3 years of experience in an automotive (or similar industry) role focusing on communication networks, infotainment systems, body controls, and delivering hardware or software.
Working knowledge of vehicle communication network systems (CAN, Flex-Ray, LIN, Ethernet), infotainment systems, and body control systems (e.g., doors, lighting, windows, seats, switch-gear).
Experience in fail-safe and fail-tolerant system design.
Experience mapping out design and requirements for complex vehicles, ensuring comprehensive coverage and flow-downs.
A strong focus on root-cause analysis for problem-solving.
Understanding of the automotive development process and phases (e.g., M1, VB, TT).
