The laboratory of Richard Mailman, Professor of Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, is seeking a post-doctoral scholar who is interested in diseases of the brain and development of novel therapeutics. The Mailman lab focuses on mechanisms of drug receptor interaction, and the discovery and development of CNS drugs. Our laboratory discovered the first selective full agonist for the dopamine D1 receptor. We took this project from an idea to clinical trials and showed that it might be the first novel treatment of Parkinson's disease, an idea proven with three Phase 3 clinical trials last year. During this same period of time, we discovered a novel signaling mechanism termed functional selectivity (biased signaling) and demonstrated that this mechanism was critical in the actions of the first third generation antipsychotic drug. We are now poised to continue these advances and would like to recruit a scientist with an interest in brain disorders and their molecular, biochemical, and behavioral manifestations. We have collaborations with other labs that enrich the overall research experience. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must have PhD and/or MD (or equivalent) degree in hand by start date. We invite applications from candidates with excellent graduate training in neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology, or related disciplines who have an interest in disorders of the brain and their potential therapy. Postdoctoral employment is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a doctoral degree within the previous five years. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal (for an additional two, one-year increments) contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
