Job Overview
This role is a System Administrator II for the Maxwell AFB AFNET and AFNET-S networks. Works as a system administrator (sys admin) and is responsible for implementing activities of technology projects relating to enterprise level systems ensuring goals are accomplished. Advise System Admin lead and manager on issues as they pertain to the server support operations. This is a full time, on-site role at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery Alabama.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Conducts day-to-day System Administration duties for the accurate and timely performance of the team's operation, maintenance, repair and customer service.
- Responsible for interfacing directly with the customer about their technical issues.
- Responsible for using the trouble ticket system to input and update tickets, track ticket progress through resolution and update the customer.
- Applies advanced systems administration skills to install, operate, maintain, and update computer hardware (server, SAN and blade server technology), software (server O/S and virtualization O/S), and services (database, email, application, web, file, print, etc.) to include planning operating system upgrades and vulnerability fixes.
- Administers database operations, virtualization operations, implement conversions, and investigates problems in database environment.
- Administers Storage Area Networks (SAN) and enterprise backup solutions (e.g. Commvault).
- Consults with management and reviews project and task proposals to determine goals, time frame and procedures for accomplishing projects, staffing requirements, and allotment of resources.
- Performs repairs on computer hardware, software and coordinates with vendors, program management offices and USAF higher headquarters when necessary.
- Installs software patches required to safeguard base machines from viruses and other malicious code.
- Prepares status reports, metrics and keeps management, and others informed of status.
- Assists other team members in the resolution of technical issues.
- Installs, modifies, troubleshoots and repairs server hardware, and operating systems.
- Configures and maintains IT equipment in accordance with established practices and guidelines, including existing constraints and directives imposed by the Air Force for network systems.
- Monitors results against technical specifications. Maintains technical documentation.
- Ensures all applicable IT equipment is current with the latest security updates.
- Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with contractual, functional and mission requirements.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- High school diploma required. Bachelor's degree in Information Technology preferred.
- 5+ years of experience with Information Technology solutions.
- DoDI 8140 Information Awareness Technology Certification (Security+ or greater).
- Virtualization certification (e.g. VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Microsoft Hyper-V) required.
- Other IT Certifications (e.g. Red Hat Linux, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)) preferred.
- Operational knowledge of server administration, maintenance and security issues; SAN administration and enterprise backup technologies; Microsoft and Linux Server Operating Systems and Server applications (e.g. SQL, IIS); virtualized environments (VCenter and ESXi hosts).
- Visio experience for diagram develop and recording is preferred.
- Proficient knowledge of trouble ticket tracking systems (i.e. ServiceNow); DISA STIGs.
- Excellent data, oral and written communication and people skills.
- Able and willing to perform, shift work, stand-by/after hours and weekend work, as needed.
- Able to lift 40 lbs unassisted.
- Able to sit at a desk, working on or troubleshooting IT related issues for extended periods of time.
- Current on the latest technological advances within the IT industry.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Secret Security Clearance.
- U.S. Citizen.
