    • Realize if you bend the rules, or even allow for that possibility, your employees may feel it is okay for them to bend the rules also.
  • Know the issues that are so risky that they must always be brought up to management, such as:
    • Bribery, possession of weapons, discrimination, workplace harassment including sexual harassment, and retaliation.

    • Example: If you tell people to "do whatever it takes" to achieve a certain result, they might assume its fine to bend or even break the rules as long as they achieve the end results.
    • Remind employees that no matter what the work pressure may be, it is never acceptable to compromise our standards to achieve our goals.

    • Foster a culture where employees feel comfortable speaking up and they are taken seriously when they do.
    • Resist the temptation to dismiss employee concerns, even if they seem small at first. Be patient and hear the person out.
    • If employees feel that you are not listening to their concerns about small issues, they will never come to you with more serious concerns.
  • Leaders are receptive to:
    • Criticism from others
    • Listen respectfully
    • Accept criticism gracefully
    • Address concerns effectively
