Director, Revenue Accounting

Job Description:

The Director, Revenue Accounting is responsible for managing all aspects of the revenue recognition accounting and reporting function to ensure that revenue is recognized in accordance with Company policy and the revenue recognition standards under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Lead the revenue recognition team and oversees daily accounting tasks, financial close activities, including account reconciliations, journal entries, preparation of billing files, and other analysis of financial information, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and proper cut-off of revenue transactions.
  • Act as the go-to subject matter expert of the Company on revenue recognition principles, revenue treatment for client contracts, and internal revenue recognition systems and applications.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally and serve as a primary revenue recognition business partner to the various departments, including but not limited to Sales, Legal, Operations, and Business Applications, to ensure revenue contracts are structured and recorded appropriately, resolve revenue recognition issues, and provide recommendations, guidance, and implications to revenue recognition related to complex sales transactions.
  • Partner closely with FP&A and broader Finance teams to ensure proper oversight of revenue data and inputs supporting significant revenue and customer related metrics, such as bookings, ARR, ATR, churn, retention, etc., including monitoring overall revenue risk of significant clients.
  • Assist Finance team with robust ARR tracking and reporting processes to support strategic planning, forecasting, and investor reporting.
  • Manages monthly posting of significant revenue streams through both manual and systematic SAP RAR (Revenue Accounting and Reporting) processes to ensure accurate posting of revenue, including performing variance and other analysis.
  • Review revenue contracts with multiple performance obligations and prepare contract summaries to ensure proper revenue allocation, recognition of revenues, and appropriate documentation of accounting conclusions.
  • Perform technical accounting research, summarize findings, and provide recommendations related to findings in written communication for distribution to necessary management and executives.
  • Oversee preparation of complex revenue recognition analysis, including reserves and allowances, remaining and recognized performance obligations, and contract balances analysis.
  • Lead system improvements and automation initiatives to streamline revenue accounting workflows and strengthen internal controls.
  • Ensure proper controls and processes are in place to maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial information, including documentation and testing of revenue-related controls.
  • Prepare revenue disclosures and audit support documentation for quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance, continuous improvement, and a collaborative, positive working environment.
  • Perform other duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.
Experience Required:
  • 10+ years years of relevant accounting experience, including supervisory roles, which demonstrates high level of expertise in US GAAP and financial reporting.
  • Experience with software revenue recognition and ASC 606
  • Experience with large ERP systems, such as SAP or Oracle.
  • Experience in public accounting and/or publicly traded company environment is highly desirable.
License/Certification Required:
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of:US GAAP and technical accounting, policies, and procedures for financial record keeping and reporting. Proficient with accounting and payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skill in:Executive-level communication presentation, leadership/management abilities, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, written communication, research, and exceptional analytical, mathematical, and accounting skills.
  • Ability to:Drive strategic direction, lead cross-functional teams, identify and seek information. Manage multiple competing priorities to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
