Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is looking for a dedicated Palliative Care Chaplain to join our team. This role will be Full-Time, Day Shift, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Job Responsibilities:

Our inpatient Palliative Care service provides care to adult patients at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. Our team consists of 6 Physicians, 3 Advanced Practice Providers, a Registered Nurse, 2 Clinical Therapists and a Hospice Coordinator.

The Palliative Care Chaplain provides culturally and spiritually sensitive assessments of, and support to, those of all faith traditions by offering individualized, psychosocially sound, spiritual care. The Chaplain participates as an equal member of the Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Team and supports an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care. The Chaplain participates in the education of trainees who rotate with the Palliative Care team.



  • Responds to requests for pastoral care in a timely manner.
  • Provides and arranges for timely/effective spiritual and emotional support to patients, their loved ones and staff from diverse cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Documents an initial spiritual assessment within the allotted time and provides periodic updates of patients' status and advancement toward goals.
  • Attends and participates in regularly scheduled Palliative Care team meetings and rounds.
  • Leads Palliative Care team's Bereavement/Remembrance program
  • Participates in the offering of worship opportunities and meeting the ritual/sacramental needs of patients and their families.
  • Functions collaboratively with the general healthcare team, the Palliative Care team, the Office of Spiritual Support Services, and community resources (e.g. faith community leaders, hospices, rehabilitation centers, etc.).
  • Participates in regular professional development activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Education: Master's degree in Biblical Studies - M.Div. or equivalent Master's level theological degree from an accredited ATS school, Four completed units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
  • Experience: 3 years of experience in a community pastoral ministry.
  • Certification: National Association of Catholic Chaplains - Board Certified eligible through the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (N/AJC), the National Associations of Catholic Chaplains (N/ACC) or a cognate group. Must be certified by one of these associations within two years from date of hire. Must maintain board certification status once received.
