The BNSF Railway Finance Department provides innovative strategic solutions and world-class financial services to support BNSF's overall performance. The department is committed to maintaining integrity and recognizing the company's successes, ensuring that BNSF remains a leader in the railway industry. Within the Finance Department, several specialized departments contribute to its overall mission: Controller, Revenue Management, Strategic Sourcing, Tax, Treasury, and Strategic Studies. Each department is vital in managing BNSF's financial health and strategic financial planning. These departments work collaboratively to secure BNSF's economic stability and support its growth and innovation within the railway industry.

This is a full-time positionlocated in Fort Worth, TX.For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely. Our leaders also foster a culture where work life balance, which requires flexibility for when life happens, is important and respected.

Travel is possible as determined by business need but typically less than 5%

This position works closely with multiple departments including Mechanical, Marketing, Strategic Sourcing, Accounts Payable, Materials, Internal and External Reporting, Capital, Tax, Payroll, Manpower Planning, Engineering Structures, Finance, and Accounting.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Review and management of operating expenses related to BNSF's car programs, AAR (Association of American Railroads) related car repairs, and the Havelock Wheel Plant (BNSF's in-house wheel plant) among other items. Includes:
    • Recording of ongoing journal entries.
    • Forecasting and Closing activities related to Income Statement/ Balance Sheet lines, such as close vs. forecast variance explanations.
    • Preparation of monthly close reports.
    • Creation of the Annual plan.
  • Review and management of capital expenditures related to BNSF's car shopping program, freight car improvements, Havelock capital program, and locomotive acquisitions among other items. Includes:
    • Monitoring actual expense vs. authorized amount for AFE's by area or responsibility.
    • Forecasting and Closing activities related to Capital expenditures.
    • Coordinating with business partners to establish the Capital Plan; obtaining approval for and creating CPAR's and AFE's.
  • Prepares and presents financial related information to personnel in the field and Mechanical operations personnel at headquarters to assist in the ongoing review of budgetary areas.
  • Works closely with Mechanical operations personnel to provide ongoing support and assistance as part of Mechanical's management of relevant budgetary areas.

Daily work is conducted in an indoor office environment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF's assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline (Finance or Accounting preferred)
  • Minimum 2-5 years' experience in finance-related field, as applicable
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple tasks and ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports, studies, financial analyses, correspondence, and other documents.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills and ability to quickly respond to critical issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related discipline (Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration preferred)
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Knowledge of freight car and locomotive maintenance and repair processes.
  • Knowledge of cost accounting principles and ability to develop/communicate metrics to business partners to aid in sound financial and operational decision making.
  • Ability to prepare training/presentation materials and conduct training sessions
  • Experience developing, monitoring, and forecasting expenses for a large/complex department/company.
  • Experience retrieving and analyzing data utilizing SAP, GQL, BI Query, SAS, etc.
  • Working knowledge of TSS, Mincom, Essbase/SmartView, OnTrack, SAP, QuickPay/Coupa.
