About the Department |
The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nuclear Engineering. We are the only nuclear engineering program in the state of North Carolina and one of the premier departments in the southeast United States. Our purpose is to enhance, promote, and utilize the
PULSTAR research reactor and associated facilities in an exemplary manner, leading to national recognition as a premier 1-MW Nuclear Reactor Program dedicated to research, teaching, and extension.
The
PULSTAR reactor facility is available for use by research faculty and staff within the
UNC system or at other academic institutions, and by governmental agencies and industries in the State of North Carolina and the Nation.

Essential Job Duties |
- Manage the radiation protection program required by federal and state regulations at the PULSTAR Nuclear Reactor in support of the emergency plan, security plan, PULSTAR nuclear reactor Technical Specifications, and the reactor license.
- Perform radiological surveys, sampling and analysis, experiment reviews, emergency planning and response, radiological training of personnel, calibration of radiological survey, counting, and sampling instruments, assessment and management of radiation work permits, and radiological assessment for license applications and amendments.
- Responsible for halting work if radiation conditions are unsafe. Serve on the NCSU Reactor Safety and Audit Committee and NCSU Radiation Safety Committee.
- Interact with regulators on license applications and amendments and on inspections.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Requires a Master's degree in Health Physics, Radiological Engineering, or a related field or a Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Radiological Engineering, or a related field and alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications |
- Satisfactory completion of a background investigation is required for access to a research nuclear reactor, radioactive sources requiring a security plan, and reactor safeguards information.
- Meets facility Technical Specification requirements for the Reactor Health Physicist position.

Preferred Qualifications |
- 2 years in a reactor facility working with radiation, radioactive materials, and radiation detection equipment.
- Experience should include performing facility radiological assessment (e.g., radiation shielding evaluations, radioactive effluent assessment), personnel and public radiation dose assessment, and response to radiological emergencies.
- Able to provide training as assigned
- Ability to run related computer codes such as MicroShield and MCNP
- An individual who either currently is, or meets the qualifications and plans to become, a Certified Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics is preferred.
