Job Summary

Our Controls Designer II, prepares and maintains detailed design drawings, schematics and submittal documents typically using computer-aided design software. Works closely with design originators (e.g., engineers, designers) to resolve design details or discrepancies or to prepare drawings of unusual, complex or original designs which require a high degree of precision using computer-aided drafting (CAD) or computer-aided engineering (CAE) equipment. Creates, modifies and controls detailed two- and three-dimensional parts and assembly drawings from engineers' and technicians' sketches, plans and written and verbal instructions. Develops and maintains drafting standards and procedures. Evaluates and recommends purchase of CAD/CAE-related computer hardware and software.


Essential Duties

  • Designs Building Automation Systems for commercial, institutional and industrial projects.
  • Uses trade knowledge of valve and actuator sizing, capacity, network topology and routing, etc. and engineering principles in the design effort.
  • Demonstrates advanced skills in AUTOCAD and vendor specific engineering tool sets to draft and model building automation systems.
  • Assists with completing preconstruction schematic designs for quantity take-offs.
  • Oversees drawing and coordination processes for each cognizant project in terms of schedule, quality and productivity.
  • Identifies design elements that must be incorporated into drawing designs.
  • Performs a variety of technical calculations such as, control valve and actuator sizing, controller point and memory capacities, network capabilities ad capacities, etc.
  • Interfaces with vendors for technical support and equipment selection based on size requirements, specific equipment selected and proposed equipment layout.
  • Performs site surveys to document existing job site conditions for use in design documents and drawings.
  • Ensures that all designs conform to all applicable codes, company policies and procedures.
  • Helps verify that design, shop and record drawings comply with company policies and procedures, including document management.
  • Visits job sites to assist with and evaluate compliance to approved design documents, drawings and code requirements.
  • Reviews architectural and structural drawings for their impact on control systems.
  • Coordinates design requirements and resulting designs with the project architect, consulting engineers, and vendor representatives.
  • Performs technical reviews of construction documents and reviews drawings prior to bid and drawing changes prior to construction to identify constructability issues.
  • Assists engineering positions with creating technical reports to support recommendations on issues.
  • Conducts research for compliance, codes changes, best practices etc.
  • Participates in forecasting labor hours needed for tasks and projects.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of Controls design experience.
  • Associate's Degree in Mechanical Design Technology or related field is preferred.
  • LEED, CEM or CPD certification is preferred.
  • Visio software skills required
  • Strong understanding of controls design fundamentals and practices.
  • Customer focused, results-oriented professional and strong team player.
  • Self-starter that demonstrates initiative.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and stay organized.
