Overview:

The Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Hot Cell Operations Shift Supervisor to support operations and isotope production missions at building 7920. The specific need for this position is for a 12-hour rotating shift radiochemical operations and processing supervisor. The primary responsibility of the supervisor is to ensure that all research and operations work is completed in a safe and compliant manner to meet established program goals within time and resource restrictions. This is accomplished by assisting the REDC Hot Cell Operations Group Leader and 7920 Hot Cell Operations Specialists and ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with applicable Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) and IPMD work control, change control, procurement, fabrication, and testing requirements.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists the REDC Hot Cell Operations Group Leader and 7920 Hot Cell Operations Specialists in scheduling and prioritization of facility research projects to support mission goals by implementing the work instructions provided to their shift.
  • Maintains qualification as a REDC Building 7920 Operations Supervisor in accordance with DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Facilities.
  • Supervises multiple shift technicians and coordinates / implements the hot cell operations work provided for their shift by the REDC Hot Cell Operations Group Leader and / or Hot Cell Operations Specialists.
  • Ensures compliance with the facility Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) by monitoring the various TSR related systems throughout their shift.
  • Participates in the performance of the various Building 7920 TSR surveillance functional tests and serve as the test lead if called upon to do so.
  • Participates in the review of work documents for hot cell operation related activities in accordance with NNFD-004, Work Control.
  • Participates in the development, review, and verification & validation of Building 7920 hot cell operations and facility procedures in support of the mission goals of the facility.
  • Assists in identifying potential problems, recognizing unexpected results, and troubleshooting some of the more complex operational problems.
  • Conducts On-the-Job training of their technicians as well as support the training officer in any other technician training aspects.
  • Uses tele-manipulators and specialized hot cell processing equipment.
  • Maintains knowledge of facility and hot cell equipment status.
  • Keeps work areas in a safe, clear, and orderly condition.
  • Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Serves as Warden on the Local Emergency Squad.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School, or equivalent, diploma with a minimum of 10 years of experience in a technical field or relevant trade apprenticeship program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least four years of experience is required in nuclear or chemical processing operations.
  • Applicants must be qualified with the 7920 Operations Supervisor qualification.
  • A demonstrated ability to work safely in accordance with ES&H standards and procedures is required.
  • Must have the ability to work as an active and contributing team member, manage time and work independently with minimum oversight, accomplish multiple tasks in a complex environment with attention to detail and thoroughness, possess an enthusiastic and positive work ethic, and possess the ability to handle potentially stressful situations. Exceptional teamwork skills, computer skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation with the ability to adjust to changing priorities are required. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrate good interpersonal skills, and work well as a team member.
  • The ability to lead and perform tasks requiring extensive manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination is required.
  • This position also requires Rad Worker II training as well as respirator qualification. Candidate must be medically qualified for Rad Worker and respirator.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Excellent organizational skills

This position is a full-time staff position on a 12-hour rotating shift.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required for external candidates after offer.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. However, all qualified applicants will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
