Equipment Mechanic l

The Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the Department of Public Works fleet with the highest level of efficiency and professionalism. This skilled role involves the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engine-powered equipment, including light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks and machinery.

• Perform a variety of skilled and technical tasks in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment
• Work on a diverse range of equipment, such as cars, trucks, refuse equipment, loaders, street sweepers, compressors, pumps, and other heavy construction machinery.
• Conduct occasional welding and machine shop operations.
• Tire care, maintenance, and replacement on equipment
• Receive assignments from a supervisor or lead person and ensure work is inspected upon completion.
• Perform PM (Preventative Maintenance) inspections and vehicle repairs on a wide range of equipment, including:
  • Automobiles, pick-up trucks, one-ton dump trucks, medium and heavy-duty dump trucks, refuse packers, container hook trucks, sewer cleaning and catch basin cleaning trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, wheel loaders, light pole crane trucks, trenchers, directional boring machines, aerial bucket trucks, stump grinders, brush chippers, skid steers, horizontal drill trucks, trailer-mounted engine-driven air compressors, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, blowers, chain saws, roto tillers, edgers, sprayers, small diesel tractors, diesel utility tractors, concrete grinders, generators, trailer-mounted trash pumps, 2 and 4 cycle snow blowers, salt spreaders, and snow plows.
• If requested, repair or maintain fire department equipment, including all-terrain gator ambulances, paramedic ambulances, fire pumper and rescue trucks, and aerial ladder trucks.

Desired Skills and Experience (Not Required):

• Assess damage and determine repair methods for various equipment.
• Perform the following types of repairs (diagnose/repair/replace):
  • Gas and diesel engines, transmissions, drive shafts, differentials, and drive axles.
  • Hydraulic and air brake systems.
  • Steering system parts, power steering, steering linkage, and steering alignment.
  • Suspension systems (coil spring, strut and leaf spring, air spring parts and components).
  • Electrical DC 12- and 24-volt lights, create electrical wiring and circuits to update or modify equipment.
  • Closed-loop electrical systems in gas and diesel engine control computers and transmissions.
  • Vehicle heating, ventilation, air conditioning, thermostats, fan motors, switches, vent cables, and controls.
  • Vehicle air conditioning components (compressors, condensers, evaporators, pressure switches, hoses) and recharge A/C systems.
• Preventative maintenance of vehicles, including replacing air filters, fuel filters, transmission fluid and filters, engine oil and filters, lubricating chassis and cab, repairing brake components, steering and suspension, electrical systems, cab H/VAC filters, lighting (headlights, taillights, and brake lights).
• Road call service: field repair of vehicles with service trucks, tow trucks, and other recovery equipment.
• Hydraulic system repair: hydraulic pumps and drive systems, hydraulic motors, cylinders, pressure relief devices, system controls, switches, hoses, and valve bodies.
• Snowplow system: snowplow brackets, hitches, electric controls, and cable controls.
• Salt spreader and pre-wet systems: salt spreader augers, hydraulic motors, electric controls, and bearings.
• Repair automotive and diesel emissions systems and catalytic exhaust systems.
• Vehicle body repair of metal, fiberglass, and plastic, including straightening body panels, priming, and painting.
• Installation of decals and safety stripe tape.
• Drive and operate semi-tractor trailers to move construction equipment, operate all equipment to assist other divisions with day-to-day operations and emergency work.
• Demonstrate the proper use and maintenance of equipment to other divisions.
• Assist in the repair of city-owned property and grounds.

Valid driver's license and meets the city's driving standard requirements
Associate's degree with 0-2 years of experience OR 4-5 years of experience without a degree.
Must be willing to obtain a CDL (B, C, D, and Tanker Endorsement) license and forklift certification within 6 months of employment.
ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Certification, preferred.
Must be willing to work in tight spaces on vehicles or equipment, as well as in all weather extremes.
