Summary

Responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of all traffic signals, Opticom preemption system, school flashers and traffic signal communication systems throughout the City. The position works in a lead role to assist the Traffic Signal Supervisor in the distribution of daily assignments and to provide field supervision for traffic signal technicians as required.

Number of Direct and Indirect Reports (include titles): 4-Traffic Signal Technicians

Pay Range: $22.20 - $28.79 (Depending on your qualifications and experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assign, oversee and perform duties to operate and maintain all traffic signals, school flashers and communications systems.

  • Assign preventative and emergency maintenance schedule for all traffic signals and school flashers.

  • Develop and monitor safety programs.

  • Install, repair, maintain and test various traffic control and communication equipment.

  • Participate in 24 hour rotating emergency on call shifts.

  • Collaborate with contractors to ensure intersections are built to City/State specifications.

  • Serve as inspector for various types of traffic signal construction projects.

  • Locate and mark underground traffic facilities for street construction purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Technician II & IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector certifications, or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.

  • Some college coursework in relevant subjects (Electronics, Engineering, etc.)

  • 5 years of experience in the traffic signal field

  • 1 year lead or supervisory experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Education/ Experience:

  • Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related area

  • 7 years of experience in the traffic signal field with a strong understanding of traffic signal systems

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of electrical theory

  • Extensive knowledge of MUTCD

  • Extensive knowledge of fiber optics, copper and Ethernet communications

  • Skills in Microsoft Office including Excel, Access, Outlook and Word

  • Skilled in basic programming of traffic signal and controller software

  • Ability to prioritize workloads for self and others

  • Ability to pay attention to fine details

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class C Texas driver's license

  • IMSA Work Zone certification (or approved equivalent)

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level II certification

  • IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector certification

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

The incumbent works with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Job requires working from an aerial device at heights up to 40 feet. Job requires working with energized or live electrical circuits, hand and eye coordination and dexterity of hands; lift and balance up to 100 pounds.
