**We have multiple positions available and can hire at one of three levels based upon the successful candidate's experience**

The available levels: Staff Real-Time Trader/Real-Time Trader/Senior Real-Time Trader

SUMMARY

As a Real-Time Trader, you will have the unique opportunity to play a crucial role in Portland General Electric's power supply management and marketing strategies. You will participate in monitoring reservoir levels, wind forecasts, and fuels supply to optimize generation resources, while also developing and submitting energy bids to commodity market operators. A successful candidate will have working knowledge of electric bulk power generation and transmission systems, as well as strong analytical thinking and decision-making skills. This dynamic position offers the chance to engage with cutting-edge energy market technologies and contribute to PGE's clean energy initiatives, making a real impact on the future of sustainable power distribution in Oregon.

Key Responsibilities

Staff Real-Time Trader

Power Supply Management - Participates as directed in monitoring reservoir levels, wind forecasts and fuels supply to optimize use of generation resources and arrange generation operations to meet load and reserve requirements for each hour; utilizes outage information to participate in commodity market dispatch of PGE generating facilities; develops and submits base schedules and energy bids to the commodity market operator on an hourly basis; assists in scheduling short-term interutility exchanges of power and related power products; begins to negotiate and purchase hourly and daily supplies of energy; identifies price/risk tradeoffs of various power system operating strategies; assists in implementing term and day-ahead contracts based on negotiated terms and developing day-ahead schedules for controllable resources.

Power Marketing - Begins to negotiate real-time energy sales, purchases and wheeling arrangements with other entities, including hourly and daily sales of surplus power throughout the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC); assists in analyzing and developing near-term wholesale marketing and commodity market bidding strategies and identifying and evaluating price/risk tradeoffs of various power sale/supply/transmission scenarios; participates in implementing near- term wholesale market strategies to meet revenue objectives; monitors West Coast power markets to identify market information that will facilitate economic transactions.

Accounting and Reporting - Documents and maintains records for PGE's Merchant Real Time Operations' activities and wholesale power transactions; assists in producing reports for governmental agencies, merchants, balancing authorities, accounting and contracting personnel and others as required.

Transmission Management - Assists in redirecting and/or purchasing transmission to meet PGE's needs for Merchant Real Time Operations' activities and reselling PGE purchased transmission that is surplus; participates in providing for efficient and economic transfer of system resources within the EIM footprint and accounting for all transmission activities.

External Relations - Develops working relationships with scheduling personnel, energy marketers and utilities to transact business.

Real-Time Trader

Power Marketing Negotiates real-time energy sales, purchases and wheeling arrangements with other entities, including hourly and daily sales of surplus power throughout the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC); analyzes and develops near-term wholesale marketing and commodity market bidding strategies; identifies and evaluates price/risk tradeoffs of various power sale/supply/transmission scenarios; implements near-term wholesale market strategies to meet revenue objectives; monitors West Coast power markets to capture market information that will facilitate economic transactions.

Senior Real-Time Trader

Power Supply Management Leads a team or personally monitors reservoir levels, wind forecasts and fuels supply to optimize use of generation resources and arrange generation operations to meet load and reserve requirements for each hour; assesses outage information and directs commodity market dispatch of PGE generating facilities; develops and submits base schedules and energy bids to the commodity market operator on an hourly basis; schedules short-term interutility exchanges of power and related power products; negotiates more complex purchases of hourly and daily supplies of energy; determines price/risk tradeoffs of more costly power system operating strategies; implements term and day-ahead contracts based on negotiated terms; develops day-ahead schedules for controllable resources; provides training and guidance on managing power supply to less experienced traders.

Power Marketing Leads a team or personally negotiates all real-time energy sales, purchases and wheeling arrangements with other entities, including hourly and daily sales of surplus power throughout the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC); analyzes and develops more complex near-term wholesale marketing and commodity market bidding strategies; identifies and evaluates price/risk tradeoffs of very complex power sale/supply/transmission scenarios; implements near-term wholesale market strategies to meet revenue objectives; serves as an authority on the West Coast power markets and captures market information that will facilitate economic transactions; provides training and guidance on power marketing to less experienced traders.

Accounting and Reporting Documents and maintains records for PGE's Merchant Real Time Operations' activities and wholesale power transactions; produces reports for governmental agencies, merchants, balancing authorities, accounting and contracting personnel and others as required; serves as an authority on energy marketing and trading.

Transmission Management Leads a team or personally redirects and/or purchases transmission to meet PGE's needs for Merchant Real Time Operations' activities; resells PGE purchased transmission that is surplus; ensures efficient and economic transfer of system resources within the EIM footprint; accounts for all transmission activities; provides training and guidance on managing transmission to less experienced traders.

External Relations Is recognized as an authority of the power trading/scheduling system and develops working relationships with scheduling personnel, energy marketers and utilities to transact business.

Qualifications

Staff Real-Time Trader:

Education

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, business, economics or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • Typically two or more years in the energy industry or related field. Experience preferred in generation dispatching or real- time operation of power plants or transmission systems.

Real-Time Trader:

Education

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, business, economics or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • Typically five or more years in the energy industry or related field. Experience preferred in generation dispatching or real- time operation of power plants or transmission systems.

Senior Real-Time Trader:

Education

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in mathematics, finance, business, economics or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience

  • Typically eight or more years in the energy industry or related field. Experience preferred in generation dispatching or real- time operation of power plants or transmission systems.

Compensation Range:

$84,450.00 - $197,375.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
