Overview
Summary The Director, Revenue Accounting works closely with the VP, Corporate Controller in the overall strategy and build-out of the Revenue Accounting team (roles/responsibilities/skillsets) in order sufficiently support the organization's growth objectives, including through acquisitions as well as organically through new customer solutions. This position plays a critical role in the assessment and documentation of complex revenue transactions to ensure the accounting is in conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. It has a deep understanding of the revenue recognition accounting standards, including specific to the IT Industry, and provides guidance to Finance, Sales, and Field personnel, as well as other members of the Revenue Accounting team, pertaining to the accounting implications of various customer arrangement structures. Additionally, it has overall responsibility for the assessment and refinement of internal controls associated with revenue transactions and works with Finance, Sales and Field team members to help standardize processes associated with the organization's various revenue streams. #LI-JM1
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Thoughtfully leads the overall strategy to build-out the Revenue Team, tools, internal controls and infrastructure to support an aggressive growth strategy of the organization
- Works proactively with Finance, Sales and Field personnel to assist in the assessment of customer arrangements while being able to clearly communicate the GAAP revenue accounting implications associated with the terms of the arrangement with the customer to multiple interested parties
- Work directly in NetSuite to ensure revenue is accounted for correctly in each period.
- Review setup in Zone Access billing to ensure processing of revenue in NetSuite is timely and accurate.
- Reviews and assesses complex revenue arrangements for appropriate GAAP revenue accounting under ASC 606 and be the first point of contact for ad-hoc questions, as they arise, around revenue recognition from the Field and Finance
- Prepares and/or reviews documentation of accounting memos to support the Company's revenue accounting for material and complex arrangements
- Works directly with Finance, Sales and Field personnel to assist in the standardization/simplification of processes associated with the Company's various revenue streams
- Assists in the training of ASC 606 to others within the organization, including other members of the Revenue Accounting team and applicable new employees on-boarded through acquisition, as necessary
- Plays key role in financial due diligence associated with GAAP revenue accounting for any future acquisition and leads effort around the integration of revenue accounting activities post-acquisition
- Leads team in ensuring that the Company's GAAP accounting policies associated with revenue transactions are constantly up-to-date as the organization, and its revenue streams, grow either organically or via acquisitions
- Assesses, refines and implements, as necessary, internal controls pertaining the Company's various revenue streams
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in a senior level revenue accounting position in the IT industry
- Undergraduate degree in Accounting
- Experience in NetSuite
- Familiar with, and intimate working knowledge of, the provisions of ASC 606 (Revenue from contracts with customers), including experience with ASC 606 within the IT Industry
- Specific ASC 606 experience and expertise should also include (i) ability to identify performance obligations in multi-solution agreements; (ii) ability to assess and determine gross/net classification; (iii) experience with Cloud-based and SaaS solutions; (iv) experience with determining what qualifies as "costs to fulfill" and "costs to acquire" and the associated accounting treatment.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Detailed oriented and experience in leading, developing and growing a team
- Comfortable and confident in the ability to clearly communicate complex matters in a manner that can be understood by others, including more senior members of the organization
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Certified public accountant
- Master's degree
