The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) University Library seeks a highly collaborative, innovative and experienced librarian to provide leadership, strategic planning, and organizational efficiency at Chicago's only public Research 1 University library system. The Associate Dean and Associate University Librarian for Information Services will supervise the unit heads who lead Access Services, Research Services and Resources (reference), and Scholarly Communications. This position will also serve as liaison to UIC Faculty Affairs to coordinate promotion and tenure.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian, the Associate University Librarian for Information Services will work in close collaboration with the Associate University Librarian for the UIC Health Sciences Libraries to ensure that the library system supports the diverse information and research needs of the university community.

Serving as a member of the library's senior leadership team, the Associate University Librarian for Information Services will share in policy-making decisions and management responsibilities and work to develop and implement priorities that align with UIC's mission and vision.

This tenure system appointment includes the expectation that the faculty member will be actively engaged in and significantly contribute to the profession through research/scholarship and service related to professional and scholarly interests. This includes publication, presentation, and committee work at various levels.

Responsibilities
  • Provides strategic leadership for information services and discovery and fosters an empowered and collaborative environment within the library.
  • Provides direct supervision to unit heads who lead Access Services, Research Services and Resources, Digital Scholarship, and Scholarly Communication.
  • Advises the University Librarian and Dean on budgetary matters concerning the library.
  • Assists the dean with donor relations and fundraising and solicits funds from external sources through grant applications.
  • Serves as a member of the library's senior management team to provide strategic and operational leadership for the University Library.
  • Collaborates with other university leaders and offices to ensure the library's functions are aligned with university policies and practices and the library's needs are understood throughout the university.
  • Provides creative approaches to fulfill the library's and the university's strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Serves as a liaison with UIC Faculty Affairs to ensure the library is engaged and informed of UIC's promotion and tenure process and procedures.
  • Provides mentoring and career development advice to library faculty and staff.
  • Actively engages in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that support diverse communities and create a welcoming environment for all.
  • Represents the library on campus-wide and library-wide committees and through participation in local, regional, and national professional library associations.
  • Participates in library, university, and professional service activities

    Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or from a master's level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country).
  • 5 or more years of experience as unit head or higher similar position.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in librarianship, research, and service to qualify for tenure and appointment to the rank of Professor.
  • Active participation in local, regional, and/or national library organizations.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to discern multi-layered environments.
  • Strong commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative, changing, and creative environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven leadership in managing units in a public research university.
  • Familiarity with a collective bargaining environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with tenure and promotion processes for library faculty.
  • Skills in project/program management and process improvement.
  • Experience with Ex-Libris' Alma library management system.
  • Experience with fundraising and/or successful grants applications.
  • Desire to bring joy to the library - to encourage and support a productive and engaged library community and environment in philosophy and practice.

    Salary and Benefits:
    The budgeted salary range for this position is $135,000 - $145,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
