Position Summary: Oversee safety functions to support company construction teams. Responsibilities
- Set exemplary standards of ethics and stewardship of the company's resources, support company philosophy, practice and goals, function as a team player and help to maintain good communication with the Safety Department
- Conduct or participate in site audits/scorecards
- Assure that all projects are supported with written site safety plans at the outset of the project. Assist in development of the plan, if necessary, and when requested, review all such plans for completeness. Assist project management in the establishment of the safety program, including medical arrangements and an injury management plan
- Work with assigned DOT personnel to ensure compliance
- Work with assigned Safety Analyst to drive the Dashboard process and visible metrics as per the Vice President EHSQ direction
- Prepare a corporate safety training plan and training syllabus with prescriptive training for all positions in the company
- Ensure all training processes are effective and meeting customers/stakeholders needs.
- Develop and present training on a variety of subjects with or without subject matter experts (SME's)
- Research training topics for development
- Set up classes, including trainers or SME's, rooms, meals, etc. to successfully accomplish the training
- Understand adult learning concepts and deploy them in the training methodology
- Maintain records and data as requested by the Director
- Track training of individuals and identify improvement opportunities to enhance training and its effectiveness
- Establish NCCER Safety training courses and assist in the courses
- Administer or assist in the edits and updates for the Corporate Safety Manual
- Work with Departmental staff and be able to function in all aspects of the safety and training department as needed by the Vice President
- Maintain effective communications with appropriate safety and/or operations management personnel for the various clients with attention to coordination of such communications with the appropriate site management and safety personnel
- Delegate, organize and coordinate safety meetings, schedule meeting rooms, arrange hotel accommodations, travel, and food, and when needed capture meeting minutes
- Provide client pre-qualification information, as needed
- Ensure the ISN, PICS and other prequalification processes are maintained as required
- Perform all other actions necessary to accomplish the foregoing essential functions
- Perform functions as deemed appropriate to the director to maintain the operation of the department
- When directed, attend job kickoffs for projects in the Division to provide appropriate safety support at the earliest planning phase of each project
- Maintain communications with site management and Division leaders regarding project compliance with the Corporate Safety Program and remedy actions.
- Work with Safety Team to assure that front-line site supervisors understand their responsibilities within the Safety Program and that they are adequately prepared to carry out those duties by providing or arranging for orientation and training of newly-hired or promoted supervisors
- Provide input and support to the Division Vice Presidents and Site Managers for performance evaluation of Safety Staff
- Assist and coordinate with the Vice President EHSQ in the selection and assignment of site safety personnel with attention to proper experience, training and qualifications for the type of project to which they are being assigned or proposed for assignment
- Perform regularly scheduled, quarterly project scorecards to assure key safety management systems are in use at each project as directed
- Maintain effective communication with appropriate safety and/or operations management personnel for the various clients in the Division with attention to coordination of such communications with the appropriate site management and safety personnel
- In the event a serious safety condition is identified during a site visit, assure that complete and appropriate corrective action has taken place before leaving the site. Assume the authority to order discontinuance of work on a project, or area of a project, where such serious safety conditions cannot be immediately corrected
- Assist project management in effectively managing occupational injuries to provide the highest levels of medical care for injured workers
- Assure that each project in the division is providing proper Drug and Alcohol Testing
- Participate as a member of the Safety Professionals Team
- Provide training, mentoring and progressive career opportunity for Division Safety Staff
- Periodically attend the Corporate Safety Committee meeting as requested
- Champion R4 program on each project
- Perform annual reviews on all site safety coordinators
- Provide reports and complete tasks as directed by the Director of EH&S
- Champion establishing site safety committees
- Champion the near miss reporting program
- Responsible for ensuring all project sites have the proper quality and quantity of safety professionals assigned to the project
- Assist in the company environmental program and weekly inspections are conducted as required
Qualifications
Education and Work Experience Requirements:
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in Safety or related field or equivalent experience
- Professional certification (CSP, CIH, CHST) required
- 12-15 years of experience in safety or construction management, or a combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Take reasonable care of your own and others' health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward the company's Zero Injury principles
- Read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations for application in the company
- Develop reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
- Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
- Excellent computer skills
- Understand environmental permitting regulations and compliance measures for projects.
- Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables
Working Environment:
- When visiting jobsites, the work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
- This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises
