Position Summary

DEFINITION
Under supervision of the appropriate administrator, this position plans, organizes, and coordinates, wide range of activities of the language learning laboratory which serves English language learners; values and promotes the mission and vision of the college.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
With minimal supervision, the incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgement in the day-to-day operations and assume the overall responsibility for the operation of the department's language laboratory to ensure that appropriate, effective tutoring is provided in order to reinforce classroom instruction. The incumbent in this position applies an in-depth knowledge of the English language to a broad range of duties related to the operations of the language laboratory, including assisting English language learners in the academic areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary development.


Essential Functions and Qualifications

  1. Plans and provides leadership of the day-to-day operations; sets and monitors goals and develops tasks.
  2. Collaborates with department and discipline instructors; assists and supports faculty with program and curriculum development and changes.
  3. Develops, plans and schedules for the implementation of tutoring and study programs which may include academic workshops, group study activities, one-on-one tutoring, language and culture exchanges, and other projects designed to promote greater student success in subject area.
  4. Recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises learning facilitators (student workers). Regularly monitors performance and provides training, coaching, and mentoring for performance enhancement.
  5. Maintains order and discipline in the laboratory; analyzes and provides solutions to problems; addresses and works to resolve any complaints.
  6. Monitors budget expenditures; orders equipment, materials, and supplies; maintains inventories to assure adequate quantities are available for timely instructional use.
  7. Assembles, maintains updates, and stores laboratory records.
  8. Compiles and maintains a variety of records, logs, files, and reports related to student learning and activities in the language laboratory; provides instructors with information relative to student attendance, academic achievement, behavior, and social and emotional well-being.
  9. Explains and demonstrates the use of computers, software, and online language learning programs; assists students with the use of technology.
  10. Evaluates lab services, procedures, and effectiveness of lab experiences.
  11. Analyzes data and reports and communicates recommendations for improvement to the program.
  12. Researches, creates, and revises instructional materials used in the language lab, including, but not limited to reference materials, practice activities, and tutorial videos.
  13. Maintains a library of learning resources, textbooks, and books for the language laboratory lending program.
  14. Identifies space, facility, equipment, and software needs and reports such needs to the program.
  15. Coordinates, organizes, and hosts seminars, and special events.
  16. Develops posters, handouts, and other informational materials regarding the language laboratory, special events, and its services.
  17. Maintains currency in policies and procedures affecting English Language learners
  18. Communicates and collaborates with academic counselors, other student services, and programs on campus; informs students of and connects students to resources on campus.
  19. Provides information to campus community about center services across the curriculum and promotes the center at college events.
  20. Attends department meetings.
  21. Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • College-level subject area germane to language laboratory assignment;
  • Educational needs of community college students;
  • Tutorial techniques for students with diverse backgrounds, e.g. student learning styles, differentiated instruction, etc.
  • Office procedures such as filing and business correspondence, report writing;
  • Office methods, practices, and equipment
  • Intercultural communication and unique needs of English language learners;
  • Technologies associated with computer-assisted language instruction; basic functions and operations of computers and software programs;

Demonstrated ability to:
  • Perform at a college graduate level in the assigned academic field;
  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with students and college faculty and staff; collaborate effectively with faculty and staff to ensure completion of all projects;
  • Show sensitivity to the social and emotional well-being of students;
  • Learn laboratory and department operations, procedures and practices;
  • Learn, interpret, and apply department and district procedures and policies relating to the laboratory with sound judgment;
  • Assess student achievement and diagnose learning problems; tutor students effectively,
  • Analyze student needs and adapt lab services appropriately;
  • Analyze situations accurately and make sound judgments on laboratory matters without immediate supervision;
  • Provide instructional assistance and technical advice to students on the availability and uses of instruction materials and equipment;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instruction in English and a foreign language;
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Maintain records;

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or higher in TESOL or its equivalent and fluency in Spanish is preferred or any combination of education, training and experience.

Physical Demands:
  • Typically, may sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Operates a computer.
  • Communicates over the telephone, via email, and in person.
  • Regularly lifts, carries, and/or moves objects weighing up to 10 pounds.

Working Conditions:
  • May be required to work a flexible workweek which includes day and evening hours and occasional weekend assignments and may be assigned to any district location.
  • Duties are primarily performed in a learning center, at a desk, or at a computer.
  • The incumbent will experience interruptions while performing normal duties during the
  • regular workday.
  • The incumbent will have contact, in person, via telephone, or electronically with executive management, supervisory, academic and classified staff, students, and the general public.

Special Qualification:
Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with disabilities.

Additional Information

The desired start date is September 2025. This is a full-time, 37-hour, classified, 10-month position.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
