This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin's Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of multi-disciplinary engineers, you will contribute to the development of radar systems for Blue Origin's lunar spacecraft. You will join the team responsible for requirement development, modeling, test, analysis, verification, and integration of the navigation radar sensors on a variety of spacecraft and missions. In this role, you will leverage your understanding of radar system design, modeling, and manufacturing principles that will enhance our lander navigation system performance by leveraging material properties, geometric constraints, and theoretical system efficiency. This position will report into the Navigation Sensors team that is responsible for lunar lander navigation sensors development and delivery.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate in the development of navigation and sensor hardware requirements from system level specifications with flow downs to subsystem and component levels, and companion verification methods
  • Assist in the design of the radar navigation architecture and hardware configuration
  • Complete design studies and execute sensor performance trades
  • Contribute to procurement, vendor coordination, delivery, acceptance, installation, verification, validation, qualification, and certification of the component hardware
  • Perform and guide testing and analyses such as flight test, thermal vacuum test, vibration test, etc. to validate top-level system specifications and requirements, and to establish performance specifications of the sensors
  • Support the development and execution of component-level navigation test programs, including sensor characterization, sensor modeling, and integrated on-vehicle testing
  • Support hardware-in-the-loop testing, on-vehicle functional testing, and flight testing
  • Support the radar and GN&C subsystem technical leads with a cross-functional mindset to facilitate subsystem and system level architectural decisions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in electrical, aerospace, or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in radar or radar system design and realization processes
  • Demonstrated experience in radar development: modeling, procurement, prototyping, integration, verification, test support, analysis, and product delivery
  • Extensive knowledge of RF components and concepts - radios, filters, amplifiers, RF integrated circuits, PCB assemblies, FPGAs, modulation schemes, signal processing, etc.
  • Experience with requirements generation for radar systems, capturing the relationships between radar subsystems to achieve optimal performance
  • Experience working across multiple frequency bands such as L, X, Ku, Ka, and millimeter wave frequencies.
  • Working knowledge of pulsed Doppler radar
  • Experience in MATLAB and/or Simulink
  • Ability to challenge status-quo, break down issues to their fundamental elements, and drive efficient product solutions with emphasis on long term goals and product sustainability
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to influence a variety of direct and indirect stakeholders and demonstrated comfort in presenting technical and non-technical trade analyses to a non-technical audience.
  • Strong technical background or technical writing experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. in electrical, aerospace engineering or equivalent with 8+ years of relevant experience in radar system development
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with navigation systems
  • Experience with software defined radio
  • Knowledge of EEE part selection for a variety of sensors
  • Knowledge in the development of planetary spacecraft navigation
  • Working knowledge of NASA human spaceflight standards

Compensation Range for:

WA applicants is $152,235.00-$213,127.95
