Provides a range of professional dental hygiene services for patients of the School of Dentistry with emphasis on patient education and preventive dental care.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. WV Board of Dental Examiners Licensure as a dental hygienist is required. 2. Current BLS Certification required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Bachelor's degree preferred CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned. 1. Provides professional dental hygiene services to patients of the WVU School of Dentistry as deemed appropriate and defined by the WVU Board of Dental Examiners' Scope of Dental Hygiene Practice 2. Records medical and dental histories 3. Provides patients with information regarding informed consent; obtains informed consent from patients 4. Reviews patient records for thoroughness and appropriateness, especially regarding any medical condition that could complicate a procedure 5. Inspects the oral cavity and reports symptoms/problems to dentist 6. Captures a variety of dental images, including radiographs and photographs 7. Performs supragingival and subgingival scaling of teeth 8. Polishes coronal and/or exposed surfaces of teeth 9. Follows the School's established clinical policies and procedures 10. Provides dental health education and pre and post treatment and/or home care instructions 11. Provides nutritional counseling 12. Examines and records periodontal findings 13. Performs clinical examinations and diagnostic tests of teeth and surrounding tissues and records findings for interpretation by a dentist 14. Places subgingival dressings, medicaments, fibers, chips, etc. 15. Performs debridement and/or root services 16. Scales excessive cement from the surfaces of teeth and restorations 17. Finishes and polishes restorations with a slow speed 18. Applies bleaching and anesthetic agents 19. Administers infiltration and block anesthesia after successful completion of a board-approved course 20. Reviews and manages patient care schedules to ensure that productivity goals are met PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
