Job Summary

This position is located in the Science Technology and Engineering (STEM) group and Engineering and Physical Sciences program area of the Career Center. Under general supervision of the associate director, provide professional advising to students and recent alumni concerning experiential education (internships, research and part-time jobs, etc.), and career planning and placement related to opportunities in engineering and physical sciences. Work with off-campus employers and agencies, UC Davis faculty, staff, and Student Affairs administrators to develop experiential education and career opportunities for students primarily in the engineering and physical sciences disciplines. Develop and present workshops, seminars, instructional offerings, and information meetings related to internship and career services. Collaborate with faculty and academic departments on programs and events. Assist with the collection and analysis of data including statistics on student participation in internships and career employment hires.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or any major related to fields associated with professions UCD students may seek.
  • Experience designing, organizing and delivering career service programs such as networking events and employer information sessions as well as experience in the development of experiential education programs.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to work successfully with a wide range of professionals within and outside academe, including engineering and technology.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to respond to stakeholders on behalf of the Career Center, and advise students in their career preparation.
  • Skills to respond to needs of ethnically and culturally diverse students and alumni, as well as sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented students and scholars in general.
  • Knowledge of career development processes as well as synergistic interactions between experiential education and career development as well as skills to give guidance, train, and evaluate performance of student advisors.
  • Familiarity with the use of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter for marketing, research, communication, and job search including skills to network and build and maintain relationships with employers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related field such as human resources, counseling (especially a career emphasis), higher education leadership, or STEM discipline.
  • Knowledge of specific requirements for employment in fields most common for graduates in the engineering and physical sciences disciplines.

The Career Center, a dynamic team, providing innovative and comprehensive career services with a commitment to equitable access, has campus-wide responsibility for developing experiential education opportunities and for providing support for the career exploration and development process to students. This includes part time employment, career planning academic internships, other forms of experiential learning and career employment (or graduate school acceptance) upon graduation with a goal that students are employed in positions commensurate with their world-class education.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
