The Senior Counsel will be part of the Midstream and Marketing legal team and will primarily provide legal support to the business activities of the marketing segment of Occidental Petroleum Corporation. The marketing segment purchases, markets, transports and stores crude oil, condensate, NGL, natural gas and power. The segment also hedges market positions, trades around its assets, including transportation and storage capacity, invests in entities that conduct similar activities, and supports Occidental Petroleum Corporation's low carbon ventures segment with marketing related issues.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal support in connection with Occidental's domestic and international crude oil, NGL, natural gas and power marketing business, including support related to (a) contract negotiation and interpretation of trade enabling agreements, including ISDAs, NAESBs, EEIs and general terms and conditions, as well as physical purchase and sale and exchange transactions (lease level, market hub and maritime); and (b) the transportation/storage of product via pipeline, truck, rail and vessel charters.
  • Provide advice and support on regulatory issues arising in connection with the marketing business, including FERC, CFTC, and exchange traded transactions on NYMEX and ICE.
  • Provide support to trade control, KYC, credit, treasury, among other internal functions, to support and enable the marketing business, including negotiation and review of confidentiality agreements, netting agreements, broker agreements, credit insurance and other related agreements.
  • Provide backup legal support in connection with Occidental's midstream business, including support related to (a) crude oil and natural gas gathering agreements, (b) gas processing agreements, (c) the development of midstream infrastructure, (d) the transportation of CO2, and (e) other operational issues.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree for an accredited law school; strong academic credentials
  • State bar membership in good standing
  • Preferred Lawyer with at least 6 years' experience, at least partially with a leading law firm
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent drafting skills
  • Strong commercial mindset with the ability to work with senior commercial managers
  • Ability to coordinate issues with other legal and business functions
  • Experience with marketing contracts, including general terms and conditions used in the crude oil, NGL natural gas and power marketing and trading industries, with an emphasis on natural gas and power
  • Experience with trade control processes and contract management systems

Relocation: Will not be offered at this time
