Job Summary

THIS POSITION IS PERMANENTLY LOCATED IN TURLOCK, CA!
Under general direction, responsible for performing routine building maintenance and repairs, renovation and building projects, equipment repairs, and overseeing facilities issues including the exterior of the facility and grounds (total site is approx. 8 acres). With a high level of independence, maintains physical plant facilities operations, including buildings, grounds, water systems, security, and sophisticated diagnostic laboratory equipment. Requires coordination with external contractors for larger repairs/maintenance agreements and serve as lead for custodial/groundskeeping staff (Senior Building Maintenance Worker). The Turlock laboratory provides a full range of diagnostic procedures for all species of livestock and poultry. CAHFS Turlock consists of a large, complex building (with basement level cremator) and associated infrastructure housed in a separate facilities outbuilding. The facility houses two tenants- CAHFS and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. This position is responsible for maintenance of spaces for both tenants.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Ability to obtain and retain Forklift/scissor lift certification.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience managing complex physical plant facility operations including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications, security systems, boilers, chillers, refrigeration, and incinerators.
  • Skills and experience in overall physical plant operating requirements including building management software/systems and performance of preventative maintenance and corrective action procedures in a laboratory, hospital, high throughput manufacturing, or similar environment.
  • Skills and experience to properly use materials, tools and equipment related to physical plant operations.
  • Skills to review and understand technical facilities data, mechanical and structural specifications, blueprints, schematics, diagrams and craft terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (oral and written) to interact with various individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to solicit and consider user input, collaboratively problem solve, and effectively communicate with clients, regulators, contractors, craft workers, campus officials and management.
  • Problem-solving skills to anticipate and analyze problems, devise and implement changes and solutions, coordinate complex and diverse tasks, and resolve service issues and complaints from building occupants.
  • Skills to independently manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously; appropriately prioritize workload; work with changing deadlines/competing priorities; analyze, present and recommend alternative solutions; and work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Water (D1) and fire system (L1) licensure.
  • Experience with specialized facilities requirements (ISO/AAVLD accreditation, CDC/USDA) as applicable to a diagnostic laboratory setting and skills to ensure on-going compliance.
  • Experience with Quality System requirements in a diagnostic laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Broad knowledge of electrical and mechanical aspects of facilities, such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); electrical; plumbing; telecommunications; structural; grounds; custodial; and security systems.
  • Knowledge of general purchasing principles, practices and legal implications, using sound buying judgment, with in-depth knowledge of sources and selection criteria.

Department Overview

The CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animals and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's early warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential. Valid CA driver's license required. This position has a work schedule of Monday-Friday and work hours are to be determined. Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.). Work flexible schedule and occasional evenings and weekends, usually on short notice, to meet business and operational needs. Share weekend/holiday coverage as needed. All CAHFS employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries. Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program. This position is subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies, as well as medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials. May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.
