JOB TITLE:

Director/Research Scientist, Center for Advanced Scientific Instrumentation

JOB PURPOSE:

The University of Wyoming Science Institute and the University of Wyoming Division of Research and Economic Development invites applications for the director of the new Center for Advanced Scientific Instrumentation (CASI) (https://www.uwyo.edu/science-initiative/casi) beginning in the Fall of 2025. Applicants with experience in quantitative imaging techniques from all fields of physical and life sciences are encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The candidate's responsibilities will focus on expanding and running the newly established CASI at the University of Wyoming (UW). The director will direct, implement, and take the lead for management of the CASI. The director will also be responsible for achieving broadly stated goals developed in conjunction with the VP of Research and Economic Development and other stakeholders. The director will be expected to develop management strategies and policies, oversee resources, and function with a high degree of autonomy. Specific duties of the director will include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing consultation on experimental design and expert technical assistance to CASI users.
  • Orienting new users to the facility and facility policies and ensure compliance.
  • Hiring and managing CASI technical and administrative staff.
  • Providing user training (e.g., graduate students, post docs, research staff, faculty) to ensure safe, competent, and practical operation of equipment.
  • Maintaining records of instrument use and training and compiling reports as needed or requested.
  • Preparing, reviewing, and revising written training materials, policies and protocols.
  • Maintaining proper inventory and ordering supplies.
  • Performing routine maintenance of equipment and as-needed equipment troubleshooting and, when necessary, facilitating instrument service and repair in a timely manner.
  • Interacting with vendors and engineers.
  • Performing demos and facility tours as needed.
  • Developing user fees, preparing yearly budget, including use statistics and cost and billing evaluations in accordance with UW Service Center Policy.
  • Remaining current with trends, equipment and software in the field through reading, attending seminars, trade shows and visits to other core facilities.
  • Proactively considering ways to improve the facility service and operations to provide the highest quality support and service to the community.
  • Assisting UW faculty in efforts to procure external research funding by helping to prepare materials for proposals, and/or by serving as co-investigator/principal investigator on research or equipment grant proposals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD in biology, chemistry, physics, molecular biology, materials science, or closely related fields
  • At least five years' experience in the use and maintenance of highly sophisticated imaging equipment.
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong candidates will possess some of the following preferred qualifications.
  • Experience in managing, leading, and motivating a team of technical staff. Ability to train staff and manage the operation of all aspects of the technology, including specimen preparation, automated image/data collection, and software control.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Writing skills appropriate to aid in the creation of clear and compelling grant proposals. Communication skills that lend themselves to clear and persuasive presentations to students, peer review groups, funding organizations, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of basic and advanced light microscopy techniques, such as (brightfield, phase-contrast, DIC, Hoffman, fluorescence, single and multi-photon and spinning disk confocal, light-sheet, high-content, super-resolution, TIRF, and others). Ability to train others in these techniques to a high degree of proficiency.
  • Some theoretical and practical knowledge of microscopy techniques employed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) dual beam systems, such as brightfield/darkfield transmission imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, and the use of FIB systems to fabricate cross-sections for TEM analysis.
  • Some theoretical and practical knowledge of aspects of small animal imaging, such as XRD and CT.
  • Proficiency in the basic upkeep and maintenance of relevant imaging systems.
  • Broad practical knowledge of basic and advanced image acquisition and analysis tools, such as Nikon Elements, JOBS, FIJI, ImageJ, ImagePro, Metamorph, Slidebook, Zen, Leica, Mcromanager and open source implementations written in Python, R, or Matlab.

The Science Institute at the University of Wyoming manages a transformative interdisciplinary initiative that catalyzes the convergence of physical, social, and biological sciences, engineering, humanities, and computing to address Wyoming's needs. Established in 2023, the Institute is housed in a state-of-the-art building featuring advanced research and teaching facilities. The Institute emphasizes innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of digital technologies in STEM education and research.
