This is a full-time, overtime eligible position in Recreation and Athletics on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College.
Position Purpose
The position is responsible for the overall operation and management of the aquatics programs and facility. The person in this position works collaboratively with Costantino Recreation Center ( CRC) Operations and campus Facilities to create an aquatics facility that is welcoming, accessible and safe. The incumbent is responsible for planning and providing strategic direction on the best use of the aquatics facility and programs in terms of safety, physical integrity of the facilities, and revenue generation.
Nature and Scope
This position is a member of the management staff of Student Wellness, Recreation, and Athletics, and provides leadership within the department and the Student Equity, Engagement, and Support division of the College. The position works toward advancing Evergreen's mission and goals, coordinating efforts within the unit and with others across the institution to provide inclusive aquatics programs which serve our students, faculty, staff, and the broader Olympia community. The position requires an understanding of and commitment to the values of The Evergreen State College.
The position reports to the Director of Student Wellness, Recreation, and Athletics and provides leadership for the Aquatics program and operations management. This position is responsible for hiring and supervising the lifeguarding staff and managing the associated budget and working cohesively with the Assistant Director for Recreation Operations and campus Facilities to keep the aquatics facility operating at an optimum level. The incumbent works closely with the Director and department staff to develop budgets and resolve personnel issues involving student and temporary employees. The position is a leadership position, contributing to the overall success of Student Recreation, Wellness, and Athletics.
Essential Functions

  • Provide strategic planning, leadership, visioning, direction, and management of the aquatics program, integrating best practice and student development in support of the College mission.
  • Manage the aquatics facilities and operations, including hiring, supervising, and training of student and temporary employees and volunteers.
  • Coordinate and deliver a comprehensive training program, which meets industry standards and supports the development of a competent and sustainable lifeguarding staff, ready and able to perform effective and safe rescues.
  • Recertify employees in lifeguarding and CPR or ensure that the pool staff is professionally trained and certified.
  • Maintain appropriate records of staff certifications to ensure staff remain certified during employment.
  • Oversee the effective, equitable, and safe operation of the aquatics facility; ensure the facility meets recreation, and campus community wellness needs, including strategic planning for renovation, construction, and purchase of new equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate health and safety records of all incidents that occur within the pool.
  • Promote a safe aquatics facility by monitoring conditions and working with CRC Operations Staff and Facilities staff to develop and adhere to a maintenance and repair schedule.
  • Responsible for the scheduling of Lifeguard staff and communicating information about programming and events to campus and public.
  • Coordinate Rental Attendant for aquatics rentals.
  • Support the development of new aquatic programming and/or expanding existing efforts with the goal of a self-supporting Aquatics program.
  • Work with Business Operations Manager to develop and maintain budgets for aquatics programming.
  • Participate in the development of marketing and promotional materials to increase participation in aquatics programs.
  • Serve as back up to student and operations staff during open hours and for special events.
  • Serve as liaison to campus and community stakeholders for coordinating programs and generating revenue.
  • Provide CPR and First Aid training to Student Wellness, Recreation, and Operations team, and other campus groups as needed.
  • Serve as instructor for aquatic fitness classes and swim lessons when needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of aquatics programming, facilities management, and operation of an aquatics facility.
  • Familiarity with safety standards, specifications, requirements, and applicable state laws regarding water safety and recreational aquatics facilities.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to effectively engage and support a diverse staff of students and part-time/temporary instructors.
  • Skill in coordinating and delivering a comprehensive training program, including lifeguarding, CPR, and first aid.
  • Skill in providing instruction for aquatic fitness classes and swim lessons.
  • Ability to plan and execute operating, personnel, and equipment budgets.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with the public and other throughout the college.
  • Ability to engage with sensitivity and awareness to the needs of diverse populations and to engage in effective leadership that supports a positive and equitable working and learning environment.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership which results in collaboration and teamwork to involve direct reports and stakeholders in the decision-making process and promote community building, engagement, and innovation to solve problems, effectively resolve conflict, and manage crisis and emergency situations.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Negotiation, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.), recreation software, and virtual meeting platforms.
  • Ability to travel for occasional observational field trips to other facilities.
  • Ability to work an extended workday or work week to respond to business needs.

Minimum Qualifications
Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor.
  • Two years of experience with aquatics facilities management and/or programming.
  • Experience working in a higher education student recreation and/or athletic area.
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information.
