The Scientific Director for the MGB Cancer Institute is a critical member of the leadership team and serves as the leader of research for the MGB Cancer Institute. Under the general direction of the President, the Scientific Director will Chair the MGB Cancer Institute Research Executive Council and provide oversight for expenditure of research dollars within the Institute. The Scientific Director will advise the MGB Cancer Institute Research Executive Council on strategic initiatives, financial expenditures, and gaps in research. The Scientific Director will provide direct oversight for translational and basic science laboratories. The Scientific Director will spend time at both AMC locations. This position is for a 5-year term, potentially renewable for a second.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Vision

  • Develops and implements the research direction and strategy aligning with the mission and goals of the Cancer Institute
  • Represents the Academic Chiefs on the Executive Committee on MGB research administration committees
  • Works with the MGB Chief Academic Officer and Senior Research Administration to organize, manage, and develop the research infrastructure for the MGB CI
  • Collaborates with other departments and institutions, both within and outside of the cancer center, to advance research efforts

Research Administration

  • Oversees the research administration of the MGB CI including budgets for research within the MGB CI
  • Identifies and develops new research programs, focusing on areas of scientific opportunity and potential impact on cancer treatment and prevention
  • Collaborates with Senior Grants Administrative Leader to oversee and manage grants administration.
  • Supports the growth and advancement of the Institute's research program, including but not limited to grant proposals, clinical trials, publication reviews, and ongoing mentorship of junior principal investigators.
  • Serves as the Cancer Institute representative to the Research Operating Committee and MGB Operating Committees
  • Collaborates with AMCs on research endeavors involving the Institute, including application for, pursuit of, and administration of research grants to support such endeavors in an ethical and compliant fashion.
  • Partners with Chairs for the Cancer Institute to support cross disciplinary research programs across the Institute.
  • Monitors research space utilization and IDC density to keep congruent with MGB standards

Personnel Management

  • Responsible for the mentorship of faculty and staff within the Institute to support their professional career development and academic promotion.
  • Completes Annual Career Conference documentation for all assigned faculty members. Participate in coaching and career discussions as requested.
  • Serves as the Institute's representative on hospital activity matters relating to regulatory compliance and research integrity (e.g., mandatory training, flu vaccine, conflict of interest, and others). Support and communicate policies and procedures that promote adherence to compliance guidelines.

Other

  • Informs the vision of the Institute, consistent with the needs of the community, mission of the Institute, and with the vision and strategy of MGB.
  • Participates on committees and/or attends meetings of BWH/MGH, BWPO/MGPO, HMS, and others that involve the activities of the Institute.
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings in the Cancer Institute and at the hospitals to facilitate and promote the Institute and its programs.
  • Attends all scheduled Cancer Institute Leadership meetings as assigned.
  • Performs other reasonably related administrative duties as are from time to time assigned by the hospital, which are required for the proper functioning of the Institute.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Achieved academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Effective organizational and communication skills
  • Exemplary ability to mentor and develop others to support faculty and staff retention
  • Strong work ethic and program development or business-oriented perspective
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Leadership: A demonstrated track record of leadership and the ability to interact with all members of the organization in ways that enhance understanding, respect, cooperation, and problem solving is essential.
  • Results orientation: Results-driven approach with experience/ability to achieve results in a metrics based analytical environment.
  • Organizational Skills: Outstanding organizational skills are necessary to manage many competing timetables and responsibilities and deadline pressures.
  • Collaboration: Able to work effectively within a matrixed based organizational structure. Collaboration with administrative staff will be essential.
  • Communicator/Facilitator: Excellent interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills and professional demeanor. Demonstrated sensitivity, discretion, and judgment regarding confidential matters are essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency, including the chairs/chiefs, senior departmental leaders, research faculty at all levels, research trainees and staff, potential donors, representatives, and vendors.
  • Judgement: Demonstrated judgement in managing sensitive issues and when to escalate problems.
  • Team: Takes personal responsibility in developing teams and is passionate about a happy, highly functioning team with the highest level of talent and performance for the responsibilities of the Department.

A tenacious, can-do personality that works to correct mistakes and get things done as efficiently as possible, often utilizing resources across services.
  • Technology: Competency in the latest digital capability to support decision support tools and environments (e.g., command center).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Attends meetings at BWH, BWFH, MGH, CNY, and occasionally Assembly Row.
SYSTEM AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works within legal, regulatory, compliance, accreditation, and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by MGB.
  • Complies with appropriate MGB policies and procedures.
  • Brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate staff.
