The Senior News Editor is an integral part of the Them editorial team. They are responsible for assigning, editing, and, when time allows, writing daily news coverage, as well as leading some of the site's feature reporting. This person should be passionate about all things LGBTQ+ across politics, entertainment, lifestyle, internet culture, and more. They should also wield an ability to quickly identify breaking stories, find fresh angles on the news, and provide or seek out robust context on news as it happens. Experience editing legislative and activism-related news is a bonus, but not a requirement. They should have a strong background in assigning, editing, and fact-checking both trending news pieces and in-depth reporting. They should also be curious, enterprising, and committed to telling LGBTQ+ stories with care, integrity, and originality. This is a Guild position.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief to assign and edit a daily news content lineup each morning spanning both politics and culture.

  • Work with analytics to consistently improve assigning strategy.

  • Pitch, assign, and edit features related to the news on a regular basis.

  • Work with the senior leadership team to meet our brand's KPIs as determined by management (i.e. production expectations, unique visitors, loyal visitors, affiliate clicks, or other related goals).

  • Contribute to brand extensions, social platforms, and projects as needed.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager

Skills and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience reporting and/or editing for a major publication or news organization.

  • A strong background in intersectional reporting on identity-related topics.

  • Adept at fact-checking nuanced stories.

  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines, and to juggle multiple assignments at once.

  • Avid reader who is abreast of latest news and LGBTQ+ culture.

  • Critical thinker and proactive content planner with the willingness to follow a lead.

  • Skilled communicator and enthusiastic team member.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $92,500 - $100,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
