Air Liquide Large Industries provides our customers with industrial gas and energy solutions that are vital to their own industrial production. We own and operate over 2,000 miles of industrial gas pipelines in the U.S. supplying mainly oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and syngas in large quantities from multiple production sources to major customers in the chemicals, petrochemicals, refining and steel industries. Our pipeline operations and industrial gas production facilities are closely monitored 24/7 within our leading-edge operations control center located in Houston, Texas. Our operations control group monitors over 89,000 data points and assists with product supply and coordination. We are constantly optimizing our supply network to provide high reliability and energy efficiencies allowing Air Liquide to adjust supply needs more quickly and effectively enabling growth to our customers.

How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW? This position will be primarily responsible for implementing APC projects, either through MVPC or AFF strategies. As part of the AFF projects, the role expands into key department programs centered around process control and DCS support as needed. As part of the MVPC projects, key functions are related to PACE Software utilization, OT related for computer setup, digital security program compliance, networking and virtualization platform support as needed.

Air Liquide Large Industries U.S. LP seeks Process Controls Engineer to work in Houston, Texas to:

  • Identify opportunities where Advanced Process control (APC) applications will improve process efficiency, operational consistency;

  • Build value/acceptance of APC applications within Operations, Zone and Plant Management and Operators, through discussion, training and demonstrated success;

  • Assist with detailed project scope, cost estimates and benefits to justify APC projects, secure funding;

  • Implement new/revamp projects within budget and on schedule;

  • Collect/analyze process data; perform step testing; identify key (control, deviation, manipulated) variables;

  • Develop APC models for required operating modes within Air Separation Unit (ASU) and Steam Methane Reforming plant (SMR);

  • Using these models, implement multivariable process control (MVPC) using PACE software or Advanced Feed Forward (AFF) control using the plant's DCS;

  • Develop practical ASU and SMR process experience;

  • Investigate/propose/implement alternative APC concepts and software applications; e.g., Model Free Adaptive Control;

  • Support APC engineering practices that establish standard hardware, software and applications;

  • Provide 24x7 technical support as required for existing AFF/MVPC applications;

  • Work closely with plant optimization engineers to establish/modify process control strategies;

  • Provide proactive remote monitoring of advanced process control performance and utilization; provide feedback/reports to Operations management for tracking return on investment;

  • Provide continuous improvement of APC and automation strategies;

  • Provide automation (DCS/PLC) configuration support for APC interface, control strategy implementation, testing;

  • Utilize practical knowledge of process control theory;

Desired experience:

  • Work with advanced process controls in an industrial gas environment;

  • Work with MVPC software (Yokogawa PACE preferred, Aspen DMC+ acceptable);

  • Familiarity with Control Systems (Ex: DeltaV, APACS, Foxboro, Yokogawa, PLC systems);

  • Work with communication protocols such as DDE, OPC or Suitelink;

  • Work with documentation including write-up of project proposals, estimates and application scope description;

  • Virtual Machine/Computer setup, network communication troubleshooting for windows OS platforms.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering plus 2 years of process industry experience in cryogenic air separation process technology or distillation process technology with at least 2 years experience in programmable control system specification, configuration, networking, commissioning and technical support with a mix of plant and corporate engineering environments
