Backup and Storage Engineer

Cooley is seeking a Backup and Storage Engineer to join the Technology Infrastructure & Development Operations team.

Position summary: Cooley Technology embraces a culture of customer service excellence, and all members of the department are expected to move this agenda forward. To that end, reporting to the Senior Datacenter and Cloud Engineering Manager, the Backup and Storage Engineer is responsible for the firm's storage, backup and DR systems and is a technical expert who executes effectively on infrastructure projects. This position, with minimum supervision, will have a thorough understanding of firm technologies and systems and will be able to understand both the business and technical requirements for new products that will be engineered and implemented by the group. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

  • Manage enterprise storage systems, including on-prem SAN and cloud-based storage
  • Analyze storage system performance and capacity to ensure optimal utilization and performance, and forecast future storage needs
  • Implement storage tiering and data lifecycle management strategies ensuring data is protected and highly available
  • Configure, monitor and troubleshoot enterprise backup solutions across on-prem and cloud environments ensuring successful completion of backup jobs and timely recovery
  • Create and maintain configuration, procedural and troubleshooting documentation for storage and backup environments
  • Work with stakeholders and management to develop, implement and improve data backup policies and retention
  • Participate in on-call support and off-hours maintenance, as needed
  • Implement required hardware and/or software for all tier and affinity infrastructure
  • Coordinate with and participate in activities with vendors such as architecture planning, system integration, firmware and software updates
  • Comply with all department policies, standards and procedures
  • Participate in change control and change managementprocesses including risk assessment, documentation and post-change review
  • Respond to administrative requests and responsibilities in a timely manner
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to travel, as required
  • 4+ years direct applicable experience (e.g., system administration with advanced systems engineering)
  • Senior candidates must have 6+ years' directly applicable experience in the field and performing exempt-level duties
  • Experience with NetApp storage and enterprise storage protocols to include CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, and FC
  • Experience with enterprise backup technologies
  • VMWare and other enterprise hypervisors
  • Experience with Hyperscalers, specifically Azure or AWS

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or associated discipline
  • Current AWS, Azure or VMware certifications
  • Prior law firm or professional services experience

Experience with:

  • Scripting with PowerShell and/or Python
  • Data encryption solutions
  • Enterprise DR Methodologies and technologies
  • DevOps technologies and methods

  • Strong project management skills, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into simple language
  • A strong team player who can successfully interact with all levels of staff and effectively work with diverse personalities
  • Strong analytical and project management skills and be capable of interpreting and applying complex technical information
  • Ability to work independently and to make sound judgments regarding the best course of action to resolve problems; ability to determine when further expertise is necessary and contact the proper individuals as required
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, set priorities, handle a number of matters concurrently and in a timely manner, all within a fast paced environment
  • High level of organizational skills required to adequately manage projects, monitor numerous live systems simultaneously, ascertain trends which may indicate problems and keep accurate up-to-date records

The expected annual pay range for this position with a full-time schedule is $110,000 - $145,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate. Senior level candidates may be considered for this position and would be eligible for a higher salary range based on experience.
