The State Director combines responsibilities of people management and plan relationship management. The State Director will manage a Retirement Plan Advisor team that is focused on helping government employees prepare for a successful retirement by helping them to replace the income they earned while working. The State Director also serves as the primary relationship manager overseeing Government 457(b) plans in their territory.

This State Director will work with public employees in Maryland and must be based in the territory with ability to travel within the territory.

What you will do

  • Drive Product Adoption & Client Engagement

Maximize use of Empower products and services-including Advisory Services-by fostering strong relationships and promoting tailored retirement strategies to meet client needs

  • Lead and Develop a High-Performing Team

Develop a supportive, inclusive environment that emphasizes autonomy, accountability, coaching, and collaboration

Perform managerial responsibilities including training, feedback, and team development

Provide oversight of the associates and of an external third-party retirement education provider

  • Deliver Strategic Plan Management and Execution

Manage and deepen relationships with clients by conducting regular reviews, collaborating with internal experts, and addressing plan design, funding, compliance, and industry trends

  • Support Business Growth and Retention

Drive plan persistency, increase participant enrollment and contributions, and expand into new political subdivisions, while identifying key performance indicators and risk mitigation opportunities

  • Ensure Operational Excellence

Uphold service model standards, ensure regulatory compliance, and coordinate with internal shared services to meet contractual obligations and optimize client outcomes

  • Communicate Empower's Value Proposition

Clearly articulate Empower's unique offerings and service model, solve complex problems creatively, and effectively convey ideas in a compelling and professional manner

What you will bring

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field preferred

  • 5 years' experience in the retirement services industry

  • Demonstrated experience in identifying solutions and resolution to issues and plan design matters

  • Effective time management

  • Strong project management skills

  • Critical thinking and decision making

  • Customer-centric orientation

  • FINRA Series 6, 26 63 and 65 registrations and applicable insurance licenses required within established timelines

  • FINRA fingerprinting required upon hire

What will set you apart

  • 2 years' experience working with leaders and key clients

  • 3 years' previous management experience

  • Prior experience with retirement plan administration

  • Ability to diplomatically persuade and influence others and navigate potential objections on complex issues/ideas/theories

  • An understanding of management, training, coaching & leadership principles

Base Salary Range

$123,000.00 - $178,350.00

The salary range above shows the typical minimum to maximum base salary range for this position in the location listed. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation offered may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
