The Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture serves as an umbrella organization for various activities related to the study of Iran and the Persianate world at UC Irvine. Designated as a campus center by the Office of Research, the Center focuses on interdisciplinary research projects that bridge the arts, humanities, engineering, medicine, and the sciences. The center was founded through an endowment from microtechnology pioneer Dr. Fariborz Maseeh and the Massiah Foundation and is administered by the School of Humanities. Since its inception, the center has hosted numerous conferences on the Iranian world, presented cultural events for the local community, and established research clusters uniting scholars on the study of Middle Persian Inscriptions, Tehran, alternative music, the Late Antique Iran.

Encyclopdia Iranica is a project whose goal is to create a comprehensive and authoritative English-language encyclopedia about the history, culture, and civilization of Iranian peoples from prehistory to modern times.


Your Role on the Team

Applies publications design and delivery concepts to contribute to the growth and accessibility of Persian-language knowledge online while working with a dedicated team of editors and experts.. Drawing on organizational policies and procedures, resolves a variety of moderately complex issues. Knowledgeable and detail-oriented Assistant Editor will join the School of Humanities team of experienced professionals in collaborating with senior editors and content creators to ensure the accuracy, quality, and cultural relevance of encyclopedia entries. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of the Persian language and excellent research skills.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of production processes and vendor requirements for a variety of products.
  • Working knowledge of applicable publishing software applications.
  • Working knowledge of databases for desktop publishing and image storage.
  • Skills to effectively produce visual materials that meet and satisfy the needs of the client.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with a variety of clients, support staff and vendors.
  • Skills in collaboration to best meet project goals and objectives of clients.
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Persian Literature, History, or a related field
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Persian (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Excellent research and fact-checking skills
  • Strong writing and editing abilities in Persian
  • Good understanding of Persian culture, history, and current affairs
  • Basic HTML skills and familiarity with digital publishing platforms
  • Familiarity with online content management systems
  • Ability to handle sensitive topics with objectivity and cultural sensitivity
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and staying updated on developments in various fields of knowledge
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience Relevant work experience

Preferred:

  • Experience working on encyclopedias or other reference materials
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices for Persian-language content
  • Familiarity with Persian-language style guides and writing conventions
  • Experience with multilingual content creation or translation
  • Understanding of copyright laws and fair use principles

Special Conditions:

  • Must be able to work nights/weekends at events throughout the year.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $23.66- $39.37 (Hourly).
