Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Public Health Institute, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, works to improve health equity and wellbeing for individuals and communities in California, nationally, and globally. PHI strengthens ideas, programs, people, and partnerships transforming public health. Through the provision of premier fiscal sponsorship services to 60+ programs partners, PHI's work maximizes program strengths and impact in capacity building, research, community and state-level public health services, use of science and data, launching and scaling what works, centering community, connecting and partnering across the health ecosystem, and systems and policy change to improve health. As a fiscal sponsorship organization, PHI provides programs with a range of core organizational services including development support, human resources, operations, bid and proposal, awards and contracts management, communications, policy & advocacy support, legal and compliance, and financial services, as well as thought partnership in program strategy and implementation. Fiscally sponsored programs are responsible for achieving their own fundraising targets. As the fiscal sponsor, PHI provides strong services, knowledge, infrastructure, and partnership to support programs' fundraising success.

We are seeking an innovative and strategic fundraiser with a demonstrated track record of successful fund development to drive funding growth. The Director of Development will collaborate with colleagues throughout the Public Health Institute to co-create the conditions for new business, relationship growth, and fund development for the organization and more than sixty fiscally sponsored programs. The position will identify new opportunities to strengthen and diversify program revenue by expanding philanthropic, corporate, state, and federal opportunities and contribute to new business and funding models. The Director provides strategic development consultation to programs that participate in PHI's fiscal sponsorship model, helping programs as they achieve their fundraising goals. The Director is also responsible for securing funding for new programs and initiatives developed by the organization. This role reports to the Chief Development and Strategic Initiatives Officer (CDSIO), collaborates with the President and CEO, Senior Vice President of Programs and Community Engagement, and partners with a multidisciplinary team to facilitate business and fund development. The Director supervises assigned member(s) of the PHI Development department.

The incumbent is required to travel in and outside of California for in-person meetings, events, and other activities approximately 10%-20% of the time. This full-time hybrid position is based in Oakland, CA, with the expectation of working in the office a minimum of one day per week.

Full salary range for this position: $144,278 to $225,289 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $144,278 (minimum) to $184,784 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined using a variety of factors, such as the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as internal equity consideration and budget availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Fund Strategy Development and Resource Generation

  • Monitor public and private funding (e.g., foundations, corporate entities, government, etc.) and investment trends.
  • Conduct research that is needed to inform concept and proposal development for strategic organization initiatives. Advise on customized strategies to engage funders and donors for the organization and programs.
  • Develop the organization's annual business and fund development plan including short, mid, and long-term goals and strategies.
  • Lead and advance the implementation of PHI's business development strategies to achieve the organization's fundraising targets, secure funding for strategic organization initiatives, and provide foundational support to programs as they achieve their fundraising targets.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders from across the organization to identify, develop, and implement funding strategies for new initiatives and expanded business models (e.g., innovative concepts, fee-for-service business consulting lines, major gifts, and foundation, corporate, and government partnerships).

Support Program and Development Staff with Achieving Fundraising Goals

  • Consult with organization, Programs and Community Engagement Department, and individual program leaders to surface a clear understanding of fundraising targets, facilitate optimal information sharing, and continuously improve fund development support services to program partners.
  • Provide all programs with foundational development supports including knowledge management, information sharing and research systems, training, and skill development.
  • Provide thought partnership and advice to individual programs.
  • Cultivate knowledge of funders that invest in public health priorities that align with the PHI and individual program missions.
  • Supervise and mentor assigned development staff and consultants.
  • Assess and improve day-to-day processes that drive prospect identification, funder screening, and communication of development updates, including coordination of updates to the development performance dashboard.

Collaboration with PHI Leadership and Organization Partners

  • Work with the CDSIO, President and CEO, and the Senior Vice President of Programs and Community Engagement, as well as other members of the senior management team, to design and pitch PHI as an enterprise and a community of fiscally sponsored programs to receive new and expanded resources.
  • Collaborate with PHI's program leadership team to maintain a clear understanding of PHI's strategic framework, program portfolio (including enterprise-wide initiatives and individual programs), staff expertise, and organization capabilities to inform business development strategies.
  • Partner with members of the development, communications, and bid and proposals teams to design effective marketing strategies that include impact and value statements. Contribute to the creation of collateral to support business development efforts.
  • Engage closely with Finance, Grants and Contracts, and Operations teams to support effective fund development grounded in financial planning, legal review, contracting practices, and operational systems.

Stewardship of the PHI Reputation and Build Relationships

  • Continuously demonstrate a strong understanding of PHI's programs, value proposition, and impact on current and prospective funders and stakeholders.
  • Build and enhance PHI's funding partner network in government, foundation, corporate, and private donor sectors.
  • With the President and CEO, CDSIO, and senior leadership, represent PHI to potential funders and partners and lead discussions on specific business opportunities.
  • Create new and lasting donor relationships, including raising seven-figure (and larger) gifts from funders that support PHI's mission.
  • Partner with program leadership team to develop and implement strategies for attracting new programs to PHI and inspire prospective subject matter experts to bring their work to PHI.
  • Contribute to the strategic design and maintenance of customer relationship management systems.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10 years of relevant experience in fund and business development with large funders, including managing and forging relationships with institutional funders.
  • 2 years of experience as a manager.
  • Bachelor's degree, or substitute with four additional years of relevant experience.

Other Qualifications

  • Track record of securing 6-7-8-figure contracts and awards from philanthropic and government sources.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and tracking progress on fundraising plans.
  • Demonstrated capability leading and working effectively in cross-department teams (e.g., programs, communication, finance).
  • Experience securing funds for a diverse array of health initiatives.
  • Experience in portfolio management - including transformational and multi-year gifts.
  • Experience using and maintaining best practices for a CRM, to ensure accuracy of donor revenue information.
  • Passionate about mission impact, adaptive, action-oriented, customer-focused, learning and improvement mindset, creative thinker, and highly collaborative.
  • Strong commitment to health and racial equity, and sensitivity towards the experiences of marginalized and/or historically underserved people, othering, structural exclusion, and cultural differences.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Results focused, while balancing team wellbeing, culture, and constructive feedback.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and time management skills in a dynamic fast paced environment.
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence skills, creative and strategic thinker, anticipatory problem solver.
  • Works effectively independently and in teams.
  • Proactive in managing staff and organizational priorities.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a manager preferred.
  • Must be able to pass the background checks required for this position.
