Purpose: To create and maintain GIS data and the production of map products following establishing guidelines. This includes geospatial data editing using GIS software to maintain geospatial data in GIS databases and GIS technology to collect data. These duties and services are generally provided across a single program or business unit. This position can also vary in terms of management and expert-level where the responsibilities can encompass the overall coordination of GIS activities across multiple business units, entire department, or agency. Roles & Responsibilities:
- Create, edit and maintain geospatial data to be used by internal staff and external customers.
- Use GIS software editing tools to create and manipulate geospatial feature classes and update documentation about geospatial data.
- Search and query GIS data, using GPS devices to collect data and download that data into GIS databases.
- Adhere to GIS data development standards and best management practices.
- Possibly visit agency or department regional offices to support regional staff in GIS data collection and GIS editing efforts.
- Create and assist support staff in creating static maps from digital data for internal and external use and perform related duties as required.
- Develop and utilize code scripts and macros to automate data editing and data distribution to improve efficiencies.
- Support and train staff in the proper use of GIS, data download and integration of GPS data into GIS databases, and conduct classes to staff in GIS software.
- Work with IT staff to integrate geospatial data with non-spatial databases and other IT services and products including integrating geospatial data into web applications and other desktop database applications.
- Insure that published geospatial data from the specified programs or business units is documented and that metadata is kept up-to-date.
- Create digital maps for use on agency or department websites an act as an official representative in person, via telephone, email, traditional mail, or other regarding GIS questions for the agency/department, statewide GIS enterprise partners and agency/department customers.
- Assist in updating GIS-related agency or department websites, maintaining and upgrading GIS software, and assist in GIS-related project planning.
- May represent the agency/department at professional seminars and public meetings.
- Pursue industry credentials as appropriate to the role.
- Maintain an expert level of technical skills and concepts. Adapt to varying and changing set of products and dynamics.
- Drive development of Best Practices for Primary Property Insurance within the Munich Re Group.
Required Technical Skills:
- Knowledge of the principles of geographic information science, GIS technology and database design.
- Experience using ESRI desktop, ArcGIS software, and GPS units.
- Skilled in the use of instruments and materials used in mapping and cartographic work.
- Extensive skill in the use of desktop GIS software and programming techniques used for GIS.
- Knowledge of geospatial editing tools, GIS data transformation methods, and GPS data integration into GIS databases.
Education, Certifications & Designations: Required
- High School Diploma OR
- An Associates' Degree in a related field with GIS coursework can substitute for part of the required relevant work experience.
- GIS Certification can be used to establish equivalency
Preferred
- One year of experience using GIS technology. Experience may be part of education curriculum and coursework.
