The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Welder. In this role you will, under limited supervision, perform weld jobs utilizing a wide variety of metals and alloys throughout the laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions, and diagrams to determine best approach for the job.

  • Interpret TIG, stick, MIG, Orbital. Electron Beam, welding symbols

  • Operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, and spot-welding equipment.

  • Fabricate, install, and repair welds in all positions.

  • Perform multiple types of welds and brazing on carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys and aluminum.

  • Work closely with Welding Technologist on certified welds and inspections.Familiarity with NDE requirements associated with welding.

  • Other tasks as assigned by management.

Basic (or Required) Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • A minimum of five years' experience in the welding industry or an equivalent combination of education, training and verifiable welding experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a formal training program and industrial experience.

  • Strong knowledge of welding principles and techniques, correct type and size of welding rod, and any other details to make a quality weld according to specifications.

  • Knowledge of materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.

  • Knowledge of techniques including soldering and brazing.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Must be able to perform basic computer functions for time keeping and on-line training.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements:Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

  • Visa Sponsorship:Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
