The R5 Operations Department in FCS Facilities Management is responsible for Cornell University's Ithaca campus non-hazardous waste program and Cornell's Universal Waste program for the Ithaca and Geneva campuses, and Cornell Remote Facilities. The R5 Operations department manages vendor collection of landfill and single stream recycling from campus facilities, has a field crew responsible to collect specialty waste streams from campus facilities, and operates Cornell's waste transfer station where over 1.8 million pounds of waste are annually collected/packaged/shipped and include, but are not limited to: electronics, light bulbs, batteries, refrigerators, scrap metal, construction demolition.

Position Summary

The R5 Operations Associate engages in all aspects of the university waste program:

  • Primary party responsible for day-to-day operations of Cornell's Waste transfer station
  • Primary party responsible for the R5 Operations reuse program (STACS--the System for Trade and Auction of Cornell Surplus).
  • Supports the campus wide Universal Waste Lamp Recycling program, the Hazardous Waste Broken Lamp disposal program, and the Universal Waste Battery Recycling program for all CU units except medical college to ensure all DEC and NYS regulations are met.
  • Responsible to maintain sound relations with customers, peers, and vendors

This role provides customer service to, and coordinates and consults with, administrators, department heads, staff and non-university private and governmental agencies in multiple aspects of day-to-day functions. This position is under the general supervision of the Manager of R5 Operations.

This is a union position within the United Auto Worker's bargaining unit (UAW). The rate of pay for sn S07 is $26.09/hr.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with at least 7 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Capability to learn software (e.g., spreadsheets, work processing), as well as computer-based inventory management system and other server-based systems. Familiarity with computer-controlled equipment.
  • Ability to work in stressful, high-volume environments with constantly changing priorities. Ability to exercise sound judgment and respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with groups and be able to carry out assignments using problem-solving skills and exhibiting sound judgment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver's license. May be required to use own vehicle on the job.
  • Must have certification, or employer will provide training and opportunity for certification, to operate a forklift. Available to work overtime as duties require, including weekends and possible shift work.
  • Ability to lift and/or move 100lbs.
